Quest giver:

Failsafe

Objective:

A research specimen found on Nessus. Complete the research quest to provide Failsafe with enough data to identify it.

Destinypedia doesn't currently have a walkthrough for this quest; could you write one?

Specimen ID: NES005 is the fifth Specimen ID quest in the Episode: Echoes Specimen ID quest chain.

Steps[edit]

"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

You place the specimen into one of Failsafe's research bays.

She thinks it will be happy in the H.E.L.M., away from roaming Vex and ponds full of radiolaria.

Joyfully, she tells you: "We rescued this specimen from the dangers of Nessus and gave it a new home on this spaceship. In this way and many others, it is just like me!"

The specimen croaks. Failsafe addresses it directly.

"I do not know if that was a sound of agreement or not. We have much to learn about each other."

Step 1[edit]

Iridescent Radiolite nodes are most commonly found after activating a planetary piston at the start of Episode: Echoes activities.

Research Instrument Fabricated: Piston Hammer Recharging - Using the Piston Hammer will occasionally recharge itself instead of consuming a hammer charge.

  • Failsafe is concerned that this specimen looks hungry and has run an analysis of its dietary needs. Collect Iridescent Radiolite to find nutritional clusters within. Failsafe calls these clusters "Bufo Bites," and believes they mirror the animal's natural food source.
    • Bufo Bites: x/30

"I cannot find a single thing on the H.E.L.M. to feed our new specimen! We need the perfect snacks for our perfect little guy."
— Failsafe

Step 2[edit]

Research Instrument Fabricated: Advanced Radiolite Analysis - Improves rewards earned by depositing Radiolite samples in the Radiolite Bay.

  • To keep this specimen happy, healthy, and enriched, it will need a natural habitat. Collect flora from Nessus to prepare a small terrarium in the H.E.L.M.
    • Nessus Flora: x/7

"If we do a good enough job, our specimen will never want to leave its tank. I won't be alone, even if you get bored of me. How wonderful!"
— Failsafe

Step 3[edit]

Defeat Vex on Nessus.

  • The H.E.L.M. doesn't have room for more than one specimen. That doesn't mean its species should go unprotected. Defeat Vex on Nessus to ensure a safe habitat.
    • Vex: x/100

"This specimen is much cuter than any Vex I have ever encountered. Priorities set accordingly, Captain."
— Failsafe

Step 4[edit]

Research Instrument Fabricated: Secondary Echo Engram Focusing - unlocks the ability to focus Echo Engrams into Act II weapons.

  • Speak with Failsafe in the H.E.L.M. to review her final specimen analysis report.
    • Failsafe's Report reviewed

Failsafe is thinking long and deeply about this latest specimen.

  • Failsafe: The frogs are saved, and you brought a new crew member aboard! Thank you, Captain! I suspect this little guy's toxic secretions insulated it from Vex radiolaria. Impressive. The Vex will adapt to assimilate this species along with the rest of Nessus. But we can protect them with violence!

"The frogs are saved, and you brought a new crew member aboard! Thank you, Captain!"

Failsafe is eager to let you know everything about Captain Jacobson, and to protect all his froggy cousins still on Nessus.

Specimen Name: Captain Jacobson

Report Summary: Unlike other fauna on Nessus, this species appears to have become accustomed to the persistent Vex threat to their home. Captain Jacobson is one unflappable frog.

Research Instrument Fabricated: Secondary Echo Engram Focusing - Unlocks the ability to focus Echo Engrams into Act II weapons.

Step 5[edit]

Captain Jacobson can be placed in the specimen display at the H.E.L.M.

  • Give Captain Jacobson a new home in the H.E.L.M.
    • Specimen displayed

"I will feed him and play with him and sing him little frog songs every day. We are best friends."

Failsafe pauses and rethinks that.

"Oh, do not feel bad! You are also my best friend, Captain."

  • Failsafe: I am honored to house you.
