Failsafe

Objective:

A research specimen found on Nessus. Complete the research quest to provide Failsafe with enough data to identify it.

Destinypedia doesn't currently have a walkthrough for this quest; could you write one?

Specimen ID: NES006 is the sixth Specimen ID quest in the Episode: Echoes Specimen ID quest chain.

Steps[edit]

"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

You place the new specimen in one of Failsafe's research bays.

"Ooh, this looks like a good one. Captain, I would like to extend my gratitude to you for your continued participation in our shared projects."

Failsafe's voice turns wistful.

"If only the H.E.L.M. had enough space for us to keep going forever…"

Step 1[edit]

Defeat combatant with Sidearms or Auto Rifles.

  • This specimen is a Vex weapon of some kind. However, it is as yet impossible to pinpoint what kind of Vex wielded it. Defeat combatants with Sidearms or Auto Rifles to narrow down the weapon's projectile type. Defeating other Guardians grants bonus progress.
    • Sidearm or Auto Rifle final blows: x/150

"Pew-pew or boom-boom? That's the mystery."
— Failsafe

Step 2[edit]

Defeat combatants using Arc or Solar damage.

  • The weapon is calibrated to do medium amounts of damage. The next step to narrowing down its source is identifying its damage type. Defeat combatants with Arc or Solar damage to provide a signature reading. Defeating other Guardians grants bonus progress.
    • Arc or Solar final blows: x/200

"Well, it's not Void. Beyond that, who knows? Us, in a little while. Up and at 'em, Captain!"
— Failsafe

Step 3[edit]

Research Instrument Fabricated: Data-Formatting Keys - Unlocks additional engrams from opening Echo chests with Echo Keys.

  • The specimen appears to deal Arc damage through a modified power source. Generate Orbs of Power to generate some potential comparison data for Failsafe to study. Orbs generated in Crucible or Gambit generate bonus progress.
    • Orbs of Power: x/100

"Arc energy can feel different depending on how it's used. The flow changes. Ghost knows what I mean."
— Failsafe

Step 4[edit]

Research Instrument Fabricated: Combat Protocol Override - Detects the presence of high-value targets in Echoes Battlegrounds. Defeat the high-value targets for bonus rewards.

  • Speak with Failsafe in the H.E.L.M. to review her final specimen analysis report.
    • Failsafe's Report reviewed

"You've got the brawn, and I've got the brains! I also have the report."
— Failsafe

  • Failsafe: Okay, so… THAT was the most violent research I've ever seen. And it was worth it! Now we know the Conductor's Vex use Minotaurs to override frames with combat protocols. We can use that while you're on missions to force high-data minds to fight us instead of hiding. Which is dangerous because they have lasers, but lucrative because they have the most data!

"Okay, so… That was the most violent research I've ever seen," Failsafe tells you. She adds, "And it was worth it!"

She displays her latest report for you.

Specimen Name: Assimilated Torch Hammer

Report Summary: This weapon is commonly wielded by Minotaurs, but its energy signature is fragmentary. It has been experimented on repeatedly.

Research Instrument Fabricated: Combat Protocol Override - Detects the presence of high-value targets in Echoes Battlegrounds. Defeat the high-value targets for bonus rewards.

Step 5[edit]

The Assimilated Torch Hammer can be placed in the specimen display at the H.E.L.M.

  • Travel to the H.E.L.M. and place the Assimilated Torch Hammer in your specimen collection.
    • Specimen displayed

There is an unexpected wistful note to Failsafe's voice.

"If I could power this up, I would not be asking you to place it behind glass. I still miss my railguns."
