As the Guardian and the Vanguard pushed into the Pale Heart in pursuit of the Witness, Zavala was telepathically contacted by some of the remaining Dissenters, who begged for his help. Against the recommendations of Ikora, Cayde and his own Ghost Targe, Zavala sought out a location in the Pale Heart where he could commune with Darkness and better hear the messages from the Dissenters. There, he received a vision from the Witness, during which the Dissenters were able to reach out to Zavala momentarily and beseech him to meet them at the place they had destroyed themselves- a recreation of one of the ritual sites where the Penitent had joined together to create the Witness.<ref name="Dissent">'''Bungie (2024/6/4)''', ''[[Destiny 2]]: [[The Final Shape]] - [[Dissent]]''</ref>

Upon reaching the site, the Guardian engaged in a fierce battle against the Witness and its Dread lieutenants as they attempted to prevent the Guardian from communing with the Darkness.
