===A Study on Pomegranate Cultivation===

January 10: Constant temperature, temperate climate simulation

I planted a pomegranate seedling in a flower bed near the bazaar. It's close to a water source and bathed in sunlight, making it a good choice.

Actually, I'd initially planned to plant it in the garden, and the masked child didn't reject my request. However, Saoirse looked like she wished I were dead when I returned with my petri dish the next day.

Shams said that silence doesn't always mean consent.

Very well. However, I maintain that the garden looks quite empty and lonely with only the masked child there. I would have liked for my little sprout to keep her company.

January 23: Temperature dropped, polar climate simulation

The seedling had started sprouting, but it clearly wasn't adapting to the frigid climate, growing at only half its expected pace.

I like plants because they're simple. Withered stems imply that they lack water, and yellow leaves imply that they're exposed to excessive sunlight. People should have leaves to express their emotions, too—especially the Exos.

February 7: Rainy, tropical climate simulation

Frequent artificial rain caused the seedling to start rotting.

…Alright, it wasn't actually rain. I had to leave Haven for a bit and asked Tan-2 to look after it. However, he ended up watering it six times per day. When I returned, I found him pacing beside the flower bed, muttering things like "apologize," "not you," and "egged me on."

Exos really do need leaves.

February 16: Cloudy, oceanic climate simulation

The seedling bore its first fruit-a perfect success!

Just imagine it—this world has heroes who carry out impossible missions, who slay labyrinth dwellers, who seek the golden fleece…but none of them are capable of protecting Haven while also cultivating pomegranates in four climates!

It's not quite how I'd originally planned to go down in history, but it's not a bad idea, is it?

===A Hat===

Shams was acting weird today.

Typically when I visit the tavern, he'd help me make small talk with the other patrons. But today, he was unusually silent, saying nothing even after two tankards of beer.

It was only when I asked him for the fourth time that he finally told me that he didn't like the hat I'd worn today.

I thought I had misheard him for a moment…

It was once my favorite hat—wide-brimmed, linen, perfectly bohemian—but I'd forgotten about it after coming to Haven. Today, I'd just so happened to find it again on the top of my bookshelf.

I questioned Shams's taste, but this seemed to make him even angrier, leading to him asking whether I'd already forgotten what had happened when I'd previously I worn the hat.

We lived in a frontier town before we came to Haven. There weren't many Lightbearers there, but whenever I wore that hat, they'd gather together and point it out, laughing at it and commenting on how "interesting" it was.

Does Shams not want me to receive compliments? That makes no sense. It's not like he's a selfish Ghost, after all.

Shams angrily knocked my tankard. He looked as though he had more to say, but he was interrupted by Wolf, who stopped by to say hello and complimented me on my hat, saying, "The bohemian look really suits you."

I looked at Shams, panicked—'Oh Traveler, protect me and keep him from getting any angrier,' I thought.

But to my surprise…Shams suddenly fell quiet. Not long after that, he told me that coming to Haven was indeed the best decision we've ever made.

I'm not sure why he said that, but I must correct him.

Actually, it's one of the best decisions we've ever made.

===A Day in the Life of Kabr===

—That's just the sun, isn't it? You can see it just by looking up. In my opinion, smart people don't chase the sun. Only the mysteries of the unknown are worth the journey. Imagine an unprecedented, unique discovery unveiling mysteries during your adventure, a discovery that you would go down in history for—what could possibly be more thrilling than this?

—Yes! A truly wonderful adventure is one experienced with friends. Who wouldn't want to form a legion of their own? We'd defeat our enemies valiantly, then drink merrily. If I had my own legion, what would I name it…? Think hard, Kabr.


"…It was the end of his journey… He shook his head sorrowfully and lamented—this wasn't his sunrise. His breath was stifled in that blinding, blazing light. His armor, shield, helmet, and belt had melted away, while a searing pain burned through his body… He died in an agonizing struggle, having never embraced the rising sun he'd chased."

—Hmm… I still don't get it even after reading it three times, nor do I like the conclusion. Maybe I should pick a story with a happy ending next time.

===A Trip to Jiangshi Metro===

It had been 3 days since I got back from Jiangshi Metro and I still failed to sleep tight.

Why had no one ever mentioned such a…tragic (is "tragic" the right word?) place? It's clearly the front line of the battle against the Fallen, but the ones fighting were all mortals—no relics or Ghosts in sight! They were fighting with their own, limited lives!

Does Lord Radegast know about this? Why doesn't he have those mortals move to Haven? Or send more Lightbearers to support them. I would definitely volunteer—even though I'd be freezing in Jiangshi Metro.

As a Lightbearer, I can't just stand by and watch mortals fight our enemies with their own flesh and blood. Kabr the Shieldbearer was born for that very purpose, after all. I will use my shield to protect everyone behind me—maybe twenty people…or ten…at least five, certainly.

…Fine, I admit I can't protect everyone.

I've been trying to defend as many people as I can, but the more I do, the more I find there will always be those I cannot save. My ability and responsibility have become a boulder that, try as I might, cannot be pushed to the top of the hill. Just like…like Jiangshi Metro. As I lay peacefully in bed with my shield put away, those mortals may still be out there risking life and limb on a bloody battlefield. how ridiculous of me, to think of protecting them.

As I wrote this, I realized how foolish I was to have described them as "tragic" when they are so much more determined, more courageous than I am, even without the Light.

Perhaps tomorrow I can talk to Lord Radegast. I'll try to convince him to let the residents of Jiangshi Metro move to Haven.

I may not be able to protect everyone, but at the very least, I should follow those who can.

===A Showdown with Tan-2===

Most times, I struggle to understand what those younger Lightbearers like Ning Fei and Tan-2 are thinking—but just as I was writing this, I suddenly came to the realization that some may find Haven's youthful energy quite shocking! Perhaps that is what Lord Radegast had in mind?

Well, they are spirited and great fighters, I'll give them that. I don't think they would handle the constraints of a legion well, though—Shams often comments on how Ning Fei doesn't even listen to his own Ghost.

As far Tan-2… I'll admit he's easier to get along with, even if he is a bit…unpredictable. Sometimes he's impulsive, but other times he's unexpectedly calm and mature. It always takes me a while to figure out his temperament.

Once, he suddenly approached me during my morning workout and inquired about how many Strikes I'd taken part in, seemingly wanting to confirm that Kevarrh had told him the truth. I corrected him—it was actually 212 Strikes, not 200.

His smile quickly turned to fury as he claimed he'd compete with me to see who could take on the most Strikes.

Sure, but…why? Battles shouldn't be regarded as competitions or something to boast about. Rather, they're an honor that you give your all for. That's why when Shams urged me to just let Tan-2 have his way, I refused… Though our whispering seemed to further provoke him.

…I can never read Exos.

Luckily, the bet wasn't boring—I enjoy fighting.

The battlefield is, without a doubt, the fairest place in the world. Here, everyone speaks with their fists and strength. I can even empty my mind and let my body act of its own accord—and I also have my shield, of course, which never lets me down.

A good fight is far more intriguing than sitting in a tavern and making all that confusing small talk with strangers.

When I returned to Haven, Tan-2 approached me and confidently asked how I'd done. When I answered, it was as if he wilted right before my eyes. A moment later, he reluctantly admitted that I'd "won for now."

I have to say, though, he's an interesting fellow, well worth befriending.

With Shams' help, I happily asked Tan-2 whether he would like me to bring him along on my next mission—if he found the strikes too difficult. Everyone knows that there is strength in numbers, after all.

Tan-2 immediately stormed off.

…I really, really can't read Exos.

===A Criterion for Heroes===

Ever since that incident, I often sit opposite Skorri in the tavern, and we enjoy a drink together.

I'm glad I can be friends with my idol, even if I have yet to be honored with a dedicated poem from the Iron Bard. Shams maintains that we aren't friends, but he simply doesn't understand—for us humans, anyone you share drinks with is a friend.

I once asked who Skorri would write a poem for. She answered my question with one of her own: what kind of person deserves a poem?

"A hero" was the obvious answer. But who is worthy of being called a hero? Is it someone who is an outstanding fighter? Someone who possesses extraordinary bravery? Someone of great renown?

After I sat there silently pondering the question for a while, Skorri gave me a few examples.

Tan-2? —No, he's still quite young, and he has much to learn when it comes to battle. Besides, he's only recently acquired his Relic. Shams would go one to say that it I sounded like I was mocking him. He also noted the subtle expression Skorri had momentarily had on her face—and here I was thinking she simply didn't like the taste of her beer. To be honest, he is the bravest young man I've ever seen, and he's amazingly gifted in combat. I quite like fighting by his side.

Ning Fei? —Certainly not. Back when he was arguing with his Ghost on the Ketch, his clamorous voice managed to drown out the tripwire mine alarms. No hero would ever be that noisy. In spite of that, he is compassionate and frank, which I appreciate a lot. Moreover, he always tells me how he's feeling so that I don't worry about him—wait, Shams just told me that those were excuses to get out of missions.

Wolf? —My good friend. A great person, but always hard for me to figure out. I've always thought that a hero should possess sensible and prudent selflessness. However, Wolf is always too concerned with everyone's expectations, making that "selflessness" nothing but wings made of wax—fly too close to the sun, and they're sure to melt.

In the end, I didn't come to a conclusion. Skorri said that my standards were too harsh and that not even heroes are perfect—aren't they, though? I was just telling the truth as I saw it.

Or maybe the Iron Bard's examples weren't quite right. Those are no heroes. No, they're my companions—only imperfect people fight side by side.

===An Ahamkara===

…Turns out the "magic dragon" hovering around Lord Radegast is an Ahamkara.

Honestly, I'd only ever seen this creature in books before. Apparently they feed on wishes. It sounds ridiculous, though… Can wishes truly fill their stomachs? Maybe they sneak behind people's backs and feast on roasts.

…Very well. Shams says they do not, in fact, eat meat.

So such magical creatures really exist? Beasts that feed on humans' desires and make them come true? It sounds too fantastical. Surely there must be a price?

Who knows. Perhaps it bewitched us somehow.

After all, I can't think of Lord Radegast keeping it for any other reasons—would an almighty Iron Lord have wishes that only such a creature could fulfill? Given his territory, authority, strength, and allies, he could easily use his courage and confidence to build a new world on the ruins of the Golden Age, if he wanted to.

I'll ask him the next time I see him.

Shams urged me to drop it. I'm not sure why, but…he sounded like he was on the urge of a breakdown… Fine then.

I don't like Ahamkara.

===A New Name===

Skorri suggested I write a letter promoting myself and post it on the bulletin board, rather than stopping all the tavern patrons to ask if they need help.

Although I don't see anything wrong with my current method—at least everyone I stop seems pleasantly surprised—her suggestion is a good one, and adopting it may bring even more opportunities.

I found the cover letter I'd written when I first came to Haven and realized that it was till signed "Peregrine."

Shams sighed beside me again, fist saying how carefully he'd picked the name "Peregrine," then saying how cool the name "Chiron" would be for a Lightbearer.

It's difficult for me to fathom how a Ghost could love the animal kingdom so much. I'd previously assumed that Shams saw a bird soaring in the sky—or some other random fowl, perhaps—then casually gave me a falcon-related name.

He's almost perfect, except his taste in names.

Fortunately, that name belongs to the past now, buried alongside the obtuse, arrogant "Peregrine" who made a scene during the opening of Haven's Iron Bar. A hero's journey entails the abandonment of many things—companions, beliefs, principles, egos…all melted in the furnace of life.

Shams still flew around me, asking me what "Kabr" means. I told him it means "grave." He went silent for a moment, then complimented me and said, "You know what? Sometimes, you're pretty punk."

I'm glad that we're on the same page.

===A Stranger in the Red Sea Rift===

I hadn't seen Wolf and Zev for a while. Today, i found that they'd been sent to the Red Sea Rift.

The pair look a bit worn and seem to have been through some tough battles. They were in good spirits, though, and suggested i pay them a visit, claiming something there would interest me. A Harpy and Minotaur or something—it took a whole tankard of beer to learn that those were monster names.

Zev showed me the images she had recorded. I was expecting to see some creatures with bull heads and human bodies, or humanoids with bird wings, but to my surprise it was a…robot?

A cold, stiff machine, called a Minotaur of all things!

It's as humorous and absurd as anything else in this world.

Wolf suspects that these things aren't pure machines. Although they behave well-trained and organized on most occasions, sometimes they react subconsciously, like a living creature—at least, not entirely like piles of cold, hard metal.

This is the first time we've seen such a creature, which means their invasion is only just beginning. Perhaps in the future, I might encounter a Hydra and an Argus in the Red Sea Rift.

It sounds like a messy mythology, one whose protagonist is just waiting to be born.

Maybe I should visit the Red Sea Rift when the time is right…

You're leaving yourself open to bullets. So I made you a helmet. It's forged using an extremely dense metal with joint designs, ensuring a snug fit and high durability.

Whether we wish it or not, the battle rages on. It is part of our past, present, and future, rearing its head when you may have let your guard down. We walk a road with no place to hide and no end in sight. At least with ample armor, we can march further still.

Additionally, if your helmet becomes damaged, come find me, and I'll forge you a new one.

As you said, I've thought much since our conversation at the tavern and the Iron Bar's opening ceremony. Since then, I've made a point to experience more of everything. Those adventures, those victories and defeats, all of them shaped me into who I am today.

It's thanks to all that I've been through that I can now truly understand what you told me back then, as well as understand how foolish and rash I'd been. I let myself be blinded by a pursuit of ethereal fame.

Fortunately, it was not an error I could not come back from. At the very least, it gave me the courage to embark on a new journey, one in which I found my companions. Before we find the "golden fleece" we seek, I cannot halt my steps—not for anything.

Now that I have crossed unseen depths and shallows, I will soon set a course for my own objective. Thus, I sincerely apologize, but I must turn down your invitation.

I no longer need fame and glory, for I've already found my own "great unknown."

I wish you all the best in this year's anniversary celebration.

===A Calling===

I sometimes still dream of that yellow earth, of the cold luster of armor reflecting light in the sand, of the smell of rust in the air.

During one of our chats, Ikora told me the Vex shouldn't have appeared during our operation in Gibralter—unless, of course, they'd already predicted our mission. It was a premeditated ambush.

Prediction. What a terrifying word…

The Vex are wholly unlike the foes I've encountered before. They record, lie in wait, and mimic. They devour any fragment of data they come into contact with, then gnaw on it until it's fully absorbed, granting them a complete understanding of the universe's creatures. They spread like a virus and lurk in the future, always one step ahead of us.

They do not latch onto weaknesses as we understand them, but logic, for thought itself is an Achilles heel.

This is the true reason the Vex are a sword hanging above humanity's neck.

Ikora says we have no knowledge of where the Vex came from; what we do know is they have existed since at least a billion years ago, and during their long history, they've latched onto and hollowed out planet after planet, building hidden bases deep in their crusts. In the copy of "History of the Vex" she lent me, I even saw mention of special realms they have on Venus and Mercury, independent of time and space.

Time cannot kill them. It can merely let the dreams of those who've failed linger a while longer.

I lost too much in that operation. My companions' lives shatter and dissipate like the visions in my blurred dreams. First was Bhate, with that massive beard of his. Then was Lehnin, who ran out of bullets… Louis, then Saina… In the end, even Roberto was powerless against them.

I haven't felt fear in a long time. Perhaps that wasn't fear, but fury, or hatred…or maybe something else, something capable of making me tremble, something that causes pain to seep from my gums as I grit my teeth.

Something referred to as suffering.

Just as it birthed me, so too did it birth my calling.

===A Fireteam===

Pahanin told me a joke today. He said when he first met Praedyth, he was so nervous he didn't even shake his hand, afraid that Praedyth's Light would vaporize him.

I laughed and told him how funny it was.

But two minutes later, I was really laughing because Praedyth said it was fine—when he first met Pahanin, he thought he was a big-mouthed idiot.

"And then?" Pahanin asked. Praedyth replied that there was no "and then."

Once I finished laughing, I asked them, "Next time, could you not tell such a hilarious joke at the Fallen's front door? Also, which of you is covering me?"

Most of the time, our division of duties is very clear. I'm responsible for leading the assault, Praedyth is responsible for clean-up, and Pahanin's responsible for those special sorts of situations. But today, Pahanin thought Praedyth had it too easy, so they started arguing.

I told them, "Gentlemen, it doesn't matter who does it as long as we deal with the Fallen before they get right in our faces."

Pahanin rushed out, followed closely by Praedyth. They even stripped me of my role as lead, only to hide behind my barrier with their rear ends on fire. In the end, Jiangshi guerrillas saved us. A kind lady among them consoled us that not every fireteam gets off to a good start—we just needed lots and lots of practice.

"Like we've been doing for the last three years?" Praedyth asked, after which he declared he'd no longer be considering suggestions from idiots.

Pahanin then declared he'd write a book of "Pahanin quotes," recording all of his conversations with us as well as all the insults Praedyth threw his way. The book of quotes would then be passed down forever, ensuring he'd always be remembered.

That joke was even funnier than the original. After all, Lightbearers don't age. So long as Praedyth and I are alive, Pahanin will never be forgotten.

===A Revisited Reflection on a Book===

Several passages have been painstakingly copied into the diary. The original reflections have been crossed out, and new text has been written.
