The '''Needle''' was an ancient biosynthetic interstellar exploration vessel of unknown origin that was lost in the depths of the gas giant [[Fundament]] prior to [[Hive|Krill]] arrival on the planet. It was located by Osmium Krill a decade before Frieren's arrival and refurbished under the direction of Taox, and subsequently put into storage as the Krill had little use for it. 

It was later gifted to Frieren as payment for assisting with the education of the [[Osmium King]]'s three eldest daughters and the defense of the [[Osmium Court]] against the [[Helium Drinkers]].<ref name="Needle"/>

== Overview ==
The Needle is a long, slender gray vessel, described as "unbreakable" and old. Unlike the sea-going ships of the Krill, the Needle was a spacecraft, an "artifact of high technology".<ref name="Needle"/> It has an operational mass of between 180,000 to 200,000 metric tons which is concentrated along a central longitudinal spine consisting of a structural load-bearing column, a neural conduction channel, and a power distribution trunk.

This triple-spine configuration ensures structural integrity even under extreme gravitational shear or pressure gradients. Internal bulkheads are semi-flexible, allowing slight deformation under stress rather than catastrophic fracture. The vessel’s unusually high mass relative to size is attributed to its dense hull composition and layered pressure-resistant internal structures designed for gas giant and abyssal operation.

It is further equipped with electromagnetic harpoons, capable of immobilizing targets with lightning bursts upon impact.<ref name="Visitor"/>

For self-defense, it is lined with a series of ion burst emitters. These emitters create localized ionic fields that disrupt electromagnetic senses and even a Worm god's telepathic might, allowing the Needle to flee and hide beneath a cloak.<ref name="Worm"/>

Running the length of the ship from prow to stern is a master corridor, interconnecting its chambers and corridors together. Branching off this central artery is a complement of twenty nine compartments and twenty two corridors along eight decks. The interior is described as "glistening", like a living creature now ossified; organic veins are visible within the walls, subtly pulsing when the ship was activated.<ref name="Needle"/>

Located at the prow of the Needle is the helm, a dome-like chamber constructed from tungsten alloy and shimmering gold metal, creating a reflective surface which amplifies ambient bioluminescence. Organic cables run through the deck and bulkheads, connecting to the ship's nervous system. A large observation viewport occupies the front half of the dome, made of a translucent material that can adapt its opacity in response to external conditions. Control panels line the walls, following the curve of the dome. 

At its center are three seats surrounded by sleek consoles with bioluminescent displays and holographic projectors, touch-activated and thought-responsive.<ref name="Needle"/><ref name="Depth"/><ref name="Settling"/>

Behind the helm is the sensor and communications array, which houses the primary sensory processing nodes and a number of subsystems, including: gravitational mapping arrays, electromagnetic sweep processors, a telepathic signal conduction lattice, and external retractable sensor spire controls.

This deck processes environmental and long-range detection data, feeding it directly into the core intelligence.<ref name="Home"/>

Arranged radially are four laboratories, each one apparently dedicated to different disciplines. Sterile, with floors that shift slightly underfoot, any spilled liquid or biological waste is immediately absorbed and recycled back into its proper place. 

There are workbenches with advanced analysis tools, most of which with no clear function but all seemingly biomechanical in design; holographic screens are embedded in the walls, projecting data that update automatically in response to the ship's environmental conditions; and locked cabinets. Each lab has a specific connection to the ship's central nervous system, allowing researchers to interface directly with the Needle's systems for scientific purposes.<ref name="Home"/>

One of these was labeled the "birthing room" by Krill, which dealt in biological experiments. A chrysalis had been removed, surrounded by dried carcasses of the former alien crew and a massive desiccated corpse, upon discovery by the Krill.<ref name="Needle"/>

Towards the center of the vessel are six large storage bays. Cavernous and reinforced, the walls are lined with alien mechanisms that resisted Krill efforts to understand and eluded even Frieren's efforts to understand. 

Each bay contains segmented compartments, most sealed with semi-transparent membranes that are unopened and locked by complex mechanical devices; the few that are exposed have been covered by hasty Krill-made draperies, designed to conform with the compartment's alien architecture.<ref name="Depth"/><ref name="Home"/> Inside these opened compartments are supplies for Frieren's journey.

==== Deck 5 ====
Located near amidships are a series of fourteen interconnected chambers, seven on either side of the master corridor, the crew quarters. Each room has organic sleeping pods that conform to the individual’s body, made from a spongy material that reacts to temperature and pressure and filled with gel that can harden to protect its occupant and is permeable to breathe through. Embedded in the walls are small orbs that provide ambient lighting and personal storage units are integrated in the walls, opening upon approach.<ref name="Depth"/><ref name="Home"/>

==== Deck 6 ====
Between the crew pods and the hydroponics chamber is the biosystems spine, which houses life-support and biological processing. It is a comparatively narrow chamber, the bulk of its operations inside the bulkheads.

It controls oxygen and waste recycling, temperature regulation, and biomass conversion. Visible organic conduits pulse slowly during active operation.<ref name="Home"/>

==== Deck 7 ====
Towards the rear of the Needle is a large cathedral-like space Krill call the "flesh garden", an obvious hydroponics chamber that grew food for the ship's previous occupants and recycled its ecology. Its internals had been hollowed out and barren when found due to its advanced age, and was refurbished extensively by Osmium technicians.<ref name="Home"/>

==== Deck 8 ====
Lastly, at the stern, is the engine room. Like the flesh garden it is also a massive space, dominated by a massive, organic-looking crystalline structure resembling an oversized gemstone that pulses with a soft, internal light: the cybergenetic core. The walls are a hybrid of living metal and exposed biomechanical conduits, with lines of regenerative tissue interwoven with power cables and pulsating veins. Service platforms circle the chamber, accessible by retractable ladders and moving walkways.<ref name="Needle"/><ref name="Settling"/><ref name="Home"/>
