- "The needle [...] is not a sea-ship like ours. It is an artifact of high technology. We have no use for it, but you perhaps may be able to unlock its secrets."
- — Taox[1]
The Needle was an ancient biosynthetic interstellar exploration vessel of unknown origin that was lost in the depths of the gas giant Fundament prior to Krill arrival on the planet. It was located by Osmium Krill a decade before Frieren's arrival and refurbished under the direction of Taox, and subsequently put into storage as the Krill had little use for it.
It was later gifted to Frieren as payment for assisting with the education of the Osmium King's three eldest daughters and the defense of the Osmium Court against the Helium Drinkers.[1]
Overview[edit]
The Needle is a long, slender gray vessel, described as "unbreakable" and old. Unlike the sea-going ships of the Krill, the Needle was a spacecraft, an "artifact of high technology".[1] It has an operational mass of between 180,000 to 200,000 metric tons which is concentrated along a central longitudinal spine consisting of a structural load-bearing column, a neural conduction channel, and a power distribution trunk.
This triple-spine configuration ensures structural integrity even under extreme gravitational shear or pressure gradients. Internal bulkheads are semi-flexible, allowing slight deformation under stress rather than catastrophic fracture. The vessel’s unusually high mass relative to size is attributed to its dense hull composition and layered pressure-resistant internal structures designed for gas giant and abyssal operation.
Dimensions[edit]
It measured three hundred meters exactly in length, with a beam of thirty meters, and a height of twenty-five meters. At its rear are three large swept tail fins measuring almost seventy meters in length and fifty at their base; between these stabilization fins is an enormous reaction engine, ringed by smaller maneuvering Hall effect thrusters.[1]
Hull[edit]
Its hull is constructed out of a silvery gray metal that flows like water yet feels smooth and dry to the touch, dubbed "star metal" by Osmium Krill, with traces of iridium, osmium, and bismuth impregnated within a graphene-like lattice. This metal possessed regenerative qualities and could adapt to certain stimuli, and withstand the crushing, superheated depths of Fundament only the paracausal powers of the Worm gods and Rhulk, Disciple of the Witness could otherwise defy.[2]
The Needle is capable of piercing the depths of Fundament,[3][4][2] and could lance through the continent-sized anemones of the Fundament depths without damage to itself.[3] However it was not completely impervious, as its hull was damaged by displays of Resonance.[2][5]
Systems[edit]
Sensors[edit]
It possesses a sensor suite that can listen across the vastness of Fundament, read various anomalous phenomena such as gravitational shifts, pressure changes, and electromagnetic fields, and could register the telepathic voice of the Leviathan and Rhulk through its hull with only minimal interference.[2] These ultra-sensitive multi-layered sensors were mounted on thin, spike-like spires that extended from the Needle's midsection, and could retract into the hull to prevent damage.[6]
Power[edit]
Intertwined with the sensor clusters are several electroplated rods specifically designed to attract and channel lightning strikes. These rods are linked to the ship’s power systems, allowing the Needle to capture ambient electrical energy during storms or attack and store it for use in its propulsion systems and plasma lances. These rods are made from a blend of tungsten and bismuth alloy, capable of withstanding the intense energy of lightning strikes.[6] The majority of these rods were severely damaged by Rhulk.[2]
Powering the vessel is a cybergenetic engine composed of a crystalline biomechanical reactor that functions simultaneously as its primary power plant, central processing intelligence, environmental regulator, and defensive control system.[1][3][4] Output capacity is sufficient to power propulsion, weapons, and cloaking simultaneously for limited durations.
In addition to passive electrical harvesting, it can utilize fusion reactions, thermal gradients, and biological metabolic recycling for power requirements, indicating an adaptive function that suggests these functions are purely mission specific and may not be its original technological form. The discovery of hithertofore gravitic generators further bear bias to this adaptive profile.
Propulsion[edit]
The Needle contains four identifiable drive systems.[1][6]
Space drive[edit]
A hybrid reaction–gravitic propulsion system located at the stern.
Components:
- Fusion micro-reactor arrays
- Gravitational shear manipulators
- Exotic particle exhaust channel
- Inertial damping field emitters
Performance:
- Maximum sustained velocity: ~0.03c
- Acceleration profile: Gradual but continuous
- Operational endurance: Multi-decade without refueling (estimated)
Inertial damping reduces internal stress on crew and structure during near luminal acceleration.
Atmospheric and Oceanic propulsion[edit]
Variable Geometry Ailerons:
Retractable living-metal fins adjust shape dynamically to maintain stability across dense oceanic depths, Jovian turbulence, and hypersonic flight regimes. They can subtly change shape to optimize drag and lift, providing smooth handling even in the strongest currents.[3]
Plasma Sheath System:
Generates an ionized envelope during high-speed atmospheric travel, reducing drag and heat load. This may also be used defensively, at the cost of potentially shortening out the ship's systems.[4]
Magnetohydrodynamic Drive:
Channels electrical energy through surrounding fluid of any density, producing thrust with minimal moving parts and near-silent operation.[3]
Anchoring[edit]
Positioned at the Needle’s stern are a set of stabilization anchors, thick rods that can extend out and secure the vessel to floating or solid surfaces. These anchors utilize a gravity clamp mechanism, generating a localized gravitational field to grip onto material even in the dense, liquid-like atmosphere.[6][2]
Other[edit]
The Needle has a distributed nervous system embedded throughout its structure that allows it to feel pain, albeit at far greater tolerances than a humanoid's. Nonetheless the Resonance attack by Rhulk caused it to retreat on its own, wresting control from Frieren easily and revoking administrative access until it was safely away, indicating primitive sentience.[2]
It had four external airlock chambers distributed along midship sections, able to withstand the immense pressures of the oceans.[1]
Weapons[edit]
Mounted along its length towards the prow are a pair of plasma lances, more powerful than anything fielded by the Osmium Court. They emit superheated energy beams capable of piercing the dense atmospheres and barriers of Fundament without losing potency. It is further equipped with electromagnetic harpoons, capable of immobilizing targets with lightning bursts upon impact.[2]
For self-defense, it is lined with a series of ion burst emitters. These emitters create localized ionic fields that disrupt electromagnetic senses and even a Worm god's telepathic might, allowing the Needle to flee and hide beneath a cloak.[5]
Interior[edit]
Running the length of the ship from prow to stern is a master corridor, interconnecting its chambers and corridors together. Branching off this central artery is a complement of twenty nine compartments and twenty two corridors along eight decks. The interior is described as "glistening", like a living creature now ossified; organic veins are visible within the walls, subtly pulsing when the ship was activated.[1]
Deck 1[edit]
Located at the prow of the Needle is the helm, a dome-like chamber constructed from tungsten alloy and shimmering gold metal, creating a reflective surface which amplifies ambient bioluminescence. Organic cables run through the deck and bulkheads, connecting to the ship's nervous system. A large observation viewport occupies the front half of the dome, made of a translucent material that can adapt its opacity in response to external conditions. Control panels line the walls, following the curve of the dome.
At its center are three seats surrounded by sleek consoles with bioluminescent displays and holographic projectors, touch-activated and thought-responsive.[1][6][3]
Deck 2[edit]
Behind the helm is the sensor and communications array, which houses the primary sensory processing nodes and a number of subsystems, including: gravitational mapping arrays, electromagnetic sweep processors, a telepathic signal conduction lattice, and external retractable sensor spire controls.
This deck processes environmental and long-range detection data, feeding it directly into the core intelligence.[4]
Deck 3[edit]
Arranged radially are four laboratories, each one apparently dedicated to different disciplines. Sterile, with floors that shift slightly underfoot, any spilled liquid or biological waste is immediately absorbed and recycled back into its proper place.
There are workbenches with advanced analysis tools, most of which with no clear function but all seemingly biomechanical in design; holographic screens are embedded in the walls, projecting data that update automatically in response to the ship's environmental conditions; and locked cabinets. Each lab has a specific connection to the ship's central nervous system, allowing researchers to interface directly with the Needle's systems for scientific purposes.[4]
One of these was labeled the "birthing room" by Krill, which dealt in biological experiments. A chrysalis had been removed, surrounded by dried carcasses of the former alien crew and a massive desiccated corpse, upon discovery by the Krill.[1]
Deck 4[edit]
Towards the center of the vessel are six large storage bays. Cavernous and reinforced, the walls are lined with alien mechanisms that resisted Krill efforts to understand and eluded even Frieren's efforts to understand.
Each bay contains segmented compartments, most sealed with semi-transparent membranes that are unopened and locked by complex mechanical devices; the few that are exposed have been covered by hasty Krill-made draperies, designed to conform with the compartment's alien architecture.[6][4] Inside these opened compartments are supplies for Frieren's journey.
Deck 5[edit]
Located near amidships are a series of fourteen interconnected chambers, seven on either side of the master corridor, the crew quarters. Each room has organic sleeping pods that conform to the individual’s body, made from a spongy material that reacts to temperature and pressure and filled with gel that can harden to protect its occupant and is permeable to breathe through. Embedded in the walls are small orbs that provide ambient lighting and personal storage units are integrated in the walls, opening upon approach.[6][4]
Deck 6[edit]
Between the crew pods and the hydroponics chamber is the biosystems spine, which houses life-support and biological processing. It is a comparatively narrow chamber, the bulk of its operations inside the bulkheads.
It controls oxygen and waste recycling, temperature regulation, and biomass conversion. Visible organic conduits pulse slowly during active operation.[4]
Deck 7[edit]
Towards the rear of the Needle is a large cathedral-like space Krill call the "flesh garden", an obvious hydroponics chamber that grew food for the ship's previous occupants and recycled its ecology. Its internals had been hollowed out and barren when found due to its advanced age, and was refurbished extensively by Osmium technicians.[4]
Deck 8[edit]
Lastly, at the stern, is the engine room. Like the flesh garden it is also a massive space, dominated by a massive, organic-looking crystalline structure resembling an oversized gemstone that pulses with a soft, internal light: the cybergenetic core. The walls are a hybrid of living metal and exposed biomechanical conduits, with lines of regenerative tissue interwoven with power cables and pulsating veins. Service platforms circle the chamber, accessible by retractable ladders and moving walkways.[1][3][4]
