Failsafe

Objective:

A research specimen found on Nessus. Complete the research quest to provide Failsafe with enough data to identify it.

Destinypedia doesn't currently have a walkthrough for this quest; could you write one?

Specimen ID: NES009 is the ninth Specimen ID quest in the Episode: Echoes Specimen ID quest chain.

Steps[edit]

"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

You place the specimens in one of Failsafe's research bays. She is delighted by them.

"Oh, more pets! More friends! Captain, I am in raptures!"

Failsafe works to restrain her enthusiasm.

"Maybe they're pair-bonded. It's okay if they don't want to be friends. I still have Captain Jacobson. And you, I guess. Oh, but perhaps we can all be best friends. Together forever!"

Failsafe's backlights glow warmly as she continues to imagine this beautiful future.

Step 1[edit]

Gather Data Lattice and open chests on Nessus to find Data Seeds.

  • These batadactyls have adapted to a special diet of radiolaria-infused seeds. Collect seeds from Data Lattice found on Nessus. Chests on Nessus may also occasionally hold seeds.
    • Data Seeds: x/20

"The first step to a beautiful friendship is… snacks!"
— Failsafe

Step 2[edit]

Gather tree branches on Nessus.

  • Failsafe's new batadactyls will need something to perch on, as their feet aren't meant for flat ground. Bring them back some comfortable branches from the treetops of Nessus.
    • Tree branches gathered: x/7

"The second step to friendship: a comfortable guest room."
— Failsafe

Step 3[edit]

Hawthorne, an expert falconer, spends her days in the Tower's bazaar.

  • Caring for these creatures requires expertise, which Failsafe admits she does not yet have. Speak with Suraya Hawthorne in the Tower about avian care.
    • Hawthorne visited

"Do not make me ask the Saint-unit about his pigeons."
— Failsafe

Hawthorne passes you a spare bird perch.

"Louis doesn't like this one. I don't know why, it's exactly like all his other ones. Uh, I did clean it, don't worry about that."

Louis screeches. Hawthorne shakes a finger at him sternly.

"Don't give me guff, you flying rat. I'm not making the Guardian carry anything you touched without disinfecting it first."

She turns her attention back to you.

"He's getting a little temperamental as he ages. Hey, tell Failsafe good luck, all right? Can't wait till I can see those batadactyls for myself. Next time the H.E.L.M. comes home, all right?"

She dismisses you with a firm nod.

Step 4[edit]

Failsafe's report is ready. To express her feelings on the matter, she has appended a short video of Hawthorne's bird screeching in excitement.

  • Speak with Failsafe in the H.E.L.M. to review her final specimen analysis report.
    • Failsafe's Report reviewed

"Come take a look at these cute little specimens! I have the report too, I guess."
— Failsafe

  • Failsafe: A subset of radiolaria has entered symbiosis with these batadactlys. Something about the bata's epidermal bacterial ecosystem. This radiolaria diverged from the collective and is now living independently on these screeching creatures. Ooh, can I keep them? We can study, uh — how the Vex radiolaria change away from the collective. Maybe they can be our new ambassadors!

Failsafe lets you know that these batadactyls are living in symbiosis with a divergent and non-damaging faction of radiolaria.

She'd like to keep the batadactyls. "Maybe," she says, "they can be our ambassadors!"

She presents you with her final report.

Specimen Names: Babata and Petris

Report Summary: Batadactyls are native to Nessus's crimson treetops. While shy, these two appear to be getting used to your and Failsafe's care.

Report Appendix: Pets are excellent for maintaining mental health. Failsafe endorses owning between one and three, and taking many photographs of them looking silly.

Step 5[edit]

Babata and Petris can be placed in the specimen display at the H.E.L.M.

  • Travel to the H.E.L.M. and give Babata and Petris a new home in your specimen collection.
    • Specimen displayed

Failsafe trains her cameras on her newest specimens.

"Oh, I hope they get along with Captain Jacobson. And with me."

  • Failsafe: This is Babata, and that is Petris. They are our new batadactly crewmates!
