Quest giver:

Failsafe

Objective:

A research specimen found on Nessus. Complete the research quest to provide Failsafe with enough data to identify it.

Destinypedia doesn't currently have a walkthrough for this quest; could you write one?

Specimen ID: NES008 is the eighth Specimen ID quest in the Episode: Echoes Specimen ID quest chain.

Steps[edit]

"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

Failsafe watches as you place your new specimen in one of her research bays.

"This better be a juicy one. I hope we wring all kinds of data from it."

Failsafe adds hastily, "It's just nice to keep busy, you know? And remain of use to you and the Vanguard."

She could use some on-the-ground help collecting data for her research.

Step 1[edit]

Research Instrument Fabricated: Tertiary Echo Engram Focusing - Unlocks focusing of Echo Engrams into Act III weapons.

  • This specimen appears to be related to a Vex command structure in some way. Defeat Vex with melee abilities or finishers to obtain their CPUs for study. Finishers have a higher chance of success.
    • Vex CPUs: x/50

"Rip them out with your bare hands!"
— Failsafe

"Oh, but I would advise still wearing your gloves. Radiolaria is not advised for skin contact."
— Failsafe once more

Step 2[edit]

Research Instrument Fabricated: Battleground Radiolite Reformatter - Find a random Iridescent Radiolite in the chest at the end of Echoes Battleground activities (two on Expert difficulty).

  • These CPUs are emitting a control sequence. They require proximity to other Vex in order to expose the access protocols. Launch and complete an Echoes Battleground from the H.E.L.M. to provide Failsafe access to the CPU protocols.
    • Battleground flawless completion

"Just because you can die and come back doesn't mean you should. Stay safe out there!"
— Failsafe

Step 3[edit]

Enter Mission: Encore to find Vex.

  • Failsafe has learned that the specimen is a container for protocols that allow a user to exert control over nearby Vex. Test this control in the Exotic mission "Encore" launched from the H.E.L.M. and defeating Vex with Void or Arc damage. Using Void Volatile or Arc Blind awards bonus progress.
    • Void Void or Arc Arc final blows: x/150

"I have been thinking about my favorite colors. Blue and purple are both on the list!"
— Failsafe

Step 4[edit]

Research Instrument Fabricated: Failsafe's Greatest Invention - Unlocks a powerful Vex stun cube in the Exotic mission. Destroy these cubes to temporarily stun Vex combatants.

  • Speak with Failsafe in the H.E.L.M. to review her final specimen analysis report.
    • Failsafe's Report reviewed

"Enough shooting, enough looting. Get scooting back to me!"
— Failsafe

  • Failsafe: Captain, the laser core you brought me does not fire lasers. It fires code! I know this sounds crazy but hear me out. Against biological targets, it de-atomizes you… because it's still super-heated. Like a laser! But not, technically, a laser. But against a lens calibrated for it… you could shoot a viral code right into a Vex receiver. I'll see what the H.E.L.M. frames can put together.

While Failsafe may describe this specimen as a laser core, it is more accurately a code core. But she urges you to remain cautious: "Against biological targets, it de-atomizes you… because it's still superheated."

With a flourish, Failsafe presents her report:

Specimen Name: Conflux Laser Core

Report Summary: This specimen is the kernel from the center of a Vex conflux. It has been modified to exert control over Vex combatants by influencing their code priorities.

Research Instrument Fabricated: Failsafe's Greatest Invention - Unlocks a powerful Vex stun cube in the mission "Encore." Destroy these cubes to temporarily stun Vex combatants.

Step 5[edit]

The Conflux Laser Core can be placed in the specimen display at the H.E.L.M.

  • Travel to the H.E.L.M. and place the Conflux Laser Core in your specimen collection.
    • Specimen displayed

Failsafe whispers to you conspiratorially.

"Did you see what I did to this thing, Captain? We're going to make a mess out there."

Failsafe makes a humming noise.

"I must clear space in my databanks. The resulting footage will be high priority. For me."
