Destinypedia doesn't currently have a walkthrough for this quest; could you write one?

Map and Territory is a Quest associated with completing objectives in The Desert Perpetual Raid.

Steps[edit]

"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

Step 1[edit]

Dean Rebecca has an urgent update on the Vex.

  • Visit Dean Rebecca on Kepler.
    • Dean visited

"News from Orin. I'm afraid our work is not yet complete."
— Dean Rebecca

Although her voice is steady, the dean's posture is tense. She begins, "You have done a great deed for us. I regret I must ask for another."

"Orin has sent news we can't ignore. The way to the Holy Anomaly is open—and the Vex have entered."

"Follow them, Anomaly-Blessed. Do what needs doing." The dean lifts her hands as if in blessing. "May your insight be acute and your judgment lucid."

Step 2[edit]

Complete the raid "The Desert Perpetual."

  • Complete the raid.

A strange device planted on the edge of Unknown Space emits a warning crackle.

Note

For a transcript of the mission, see The Desert Perpetual#Transcript.

Step 3[edit]

Visit the Simulant Ansible to speak to Maya and Chioma across the Vex Network.

  • Approach the Simulant Ansible within the Nursery.
    • Ansible visited

""Hello? Hello? Is this thing on?"
— 227.87 Maya Sundaresh

"Yes, the Guardian can hear you."
— 227.50 Chioma Esi

  • Chioma Esi: This piece of Unknown Space remains connected to the Vex Network. It presents an opportunity. Maya and I are at different points within the net. With you, we make three.
  • Maya Sundaresh: Three points of triangulation: the first step towards a map. The Vex use their network for simulations, billions of them layered one atop the other. At points of similarity, they converge.
  • Chioma Esi: Set down anchors at those points, and we can find every connected simulation. We can begin to chart the VexNet itself.

The Simulant Ansible presses at the border of Unknown Space and the Vex Network, connecting the threads of simulated worlds beyond number. 227.50 Chioma Esi, herself a simulation of the Vex and a longtime explorer of the Network, speaks to you through its towering figure.

"Maya and I are at different points within the Net. With you, we make three."

"Three points of triangulation: the first step towards a map," Maya adds. "The Vex use their network for simulations, billions of them layered one atop the other. At points of similarity, they converge."

Chioma and Maya can use the nature of the Ansible to call forth a series of anchors with which you may connect the web of Vex simulations.

With the determination of one committed to the impossible, Chioma tells you: "We can begin to chart the VexNet itself."

Step 4[edit]

Identify a confluence of VexNet simulations.

  • Use your network proximity sensor to identify areas where simulations converge.
    • Convergence identified

"It's time to go simulation-hunting."
— 227.50 Chioma Esi

  • Maya Sundaresh: Spacetime is in flux here. Pin it down and we'll learn from it.

Step 5[edit]

Locate and anchor all remaining convergences.

  • Search for convergences to add to Maya and Chioma's data set.
    • Signals identified: x/12

"As one professor told me, the more points of data, the merrier."
— 227.50 Chioma Esi

  • Chioma Esi: A living gravitic anomaly… dead at the hands of the Conductor. A show of strength beyond even the Vex…
  • Maya Sundaresh: She will not trap you again, Chioma.
  • Chioma Esi: You can't know that.

  • Chioma Esi: The Conductor plucked me from the VexNet and brought me somewhere else. After a time, she disappeared, and a path opened. I took it. Now I couldn't tell you where I am within the Vex network. It's not a place with many landmarks. I'm grateful for the dataset we're putting together… for more than one reason.

  • Maya Sundaresh: The simulated worlds within the Vex Network are functionally infinite. Convergence points narrow our task — to a degree.
  • Chioma Esi: Finding the needle in the haystack. Or microchip in the lab junk drawer, would you say, heh? Apologies, Guardian. It's been some time since I've been able to talk to Maya. It's hard to stop myself.
  • Maya Sundaresh: And now they know about the second most embarrassing moment of my undergrad.

  • Chioma Esi: Pulling the coordinates. Almost… no. Damn! Lost it. Apologies, Guardian.
  • Maya Sundaresh: Even a negative result will contribute to our dataset.
  • Chioma Esi: I know! I'm sorry.
  • Maya Sundaresh: No need. We'll get there. We'll find you.

  • Chioma Esi: Four of us studied the Vex. Maya, me, and Doctors Shim and Duane-McNiadh. We were each copied by the Vex 227 times precisely. I'm a Chioma of the 50th set. Together, we decided we would not be prisoners in the net, but explorers. Researchers with infinite subject material.
  • Maya Sundaresh: World enough and time… almost a dream, if not for the Vex themselves.

  • Maya Sundaresh: How can you not be angry with me for the Conductor's actions? I am.
  • Chioma Esi: She isn't you. As .50 Maya isn't you. You didn't trap me in a lab — I didn't break up with you on a simulated Pluto. Didn't the Vex's experiments teach us that? A shared baseline doesn't speak to shared results. Besides, the Conductor couldn't be you. She was too tall.

  • Maya Sundaresh: Chioma, if we have a stable coordinate system, we could use it to find each other in person, instead of speaking only over radio.
  • Chioma Esi: You're just realizing this now?
  • Maya Sundaresh: I just worked up the courage to say it.

  • Maya Sundaresh: Guardian, the categorization system we built out for the VexNet works on the same principle we're using now: tagging variants of Vex simulations. I am in what we named "variation rho" of the green moon world. That's where you'll find me, Chioma. If you still want to.

  • Chioma Esi: It's disorienting… to be one among over 200 people bearing the name Chioma Esi. Disorienting to be plucked from what stability I had into the Conductor's lab. Then back in the VexNet — lost. Alone. Our cartography work is one pillar showing me where it is that I stand. You're another, Maya.

  • Chioma Esi: Yes! I recognize these coordinates. Maya, do you still have your notes?
  • Maya Sundaresh: Variation phi of the Heather archipelago, if you remember that one.
  • Chioma Esi: Strange to say, but… after a lifetime exploring, some Vex simulations can feel almost homelike. Heather phi was a good one.

  • Chioma Esi: We've got our preliminary dataset. Thank you, Guardian. We'll use this information to keep you posted on the Vex as we're able.
  • Maya Sundaresh: And… Chioma and I will be able to find each other again.
  • Chioma Esi: Green moon rho, you said? Wait right there. I'm coming to you, Maya.
  • Maya Sundaresh: I'll be here.

Step 6[edit]

Visit the Simulant Ansible.

  • Maya and Chioma signal you back to the communications hub in the Nursery.
    • Ansible visited

"You've returned my life to me, Guardian. May we speak?"
— 227.87 Maya Sundaresh

  • Chioma Esi: We've charted paths within the network, learned more about the Vex, and… Maya and I have found our way back to each other. All thanks to you.
  • Maya Sundaresh: Our work continues. We must rally the other exploratory teams, and we must stop the Conductor before she kills again. She may not be me, but I recognize myself in her. I owe it to Chioma to stop her. I owe it to myself.
  • Chioma Esi: So you're being self-serving.
  • Maya Sundaresh: It's part of my baseline. We may as well use it.

The Simulant Ansible crackles to life once more, projecting voices from the other end of the Vex Network.

"We've charted paths within the Network, learned more about the Vex, and… Maya and I have found our way back to each other," 227.50 Chioma says. She adds, "All thanks to you."

227.87 Maya, now at Chioma's side, says, "Our work continues. We must rally the other exploratory teams, and we must stop the Conductor before she kills again. She may not be me, but I recognize myself in her. I owe it to Chioma to stop her. I owe it to myself."

"So, you're being self-serving," Chioma says, not without a fond twist of humor.

"It's part of my baseline." Maya's voice is wry. "We may as well use it."

Maya and Chioma will continue their work within the VexNet with the help of your map and wish you the best in your battles against the Vex outside it.
