Manticores are large floating Vex units first employed by the Torus Assimilative and encountered throughout the Worlds Beyond expansion.
Overview[edit]
Manticores are levitating Vex units that look almost identical to a Hydra. Their large main bodies support a long necked head in it's center, allowing the Manticore a good amount of degrees of visibility around it and from its hind side hangs a bunch of radiolarian tendrils and tails, with a main Hydra-like tail in the middle and two larger ones ending in long weapon-like devices radiating with solar energy. Most striking is the pair of hands protected by thick vambraces hanging from the side of it, often folded into the frame when in an idle state, which it will use to interact with the environment, use as a stand when resting its bulky frame and especially in combat.
Gameplay[edit]
Much like Hydras and Harpies, Manticores will levitate around the arena and stick to a position to make their stand and harry their adversaries. More like a Hydra, they will maneuver around to get a better shot on their opponents. Their main weapon of choice is a pair of long-range solar shotgun-like weapons called Slam Cannons, each on two of the Manticore's main tentacles. Each fires a seven projectile spread of solar bolts, all traveling from weapon to surface almost instantly, and have pretty incredible range to boot –although the spread of the blasts may not be as effective from range. It will fire both Slam Cannons in quick succession, and can fire again after a short pause. With precise enough aiming, however, Guardians can temporarily disable the Slam Cannons and "disarm" the Manticore for a period.
Should an opponent get too close or if the Manticore has lost its Slam Cannons, however, they may then resort to its two broad-clawed arms. When dealing with a close opponent, it will simply swipe at them with Arc energy, sometimes chaining combos with the right swings from both arms, with a combo easily capable of depleting a Guardian's health. On occasion, however, the Manticore will let out a guttural sound, rear one of its arms up and charge an opponent before slamming their hand into the ground and creating an area of effect blast called a Conductive Slam, dealing sheer damage and knockback, and can repeat it again with a larger blast radius if the initial slam missed.
The Manticore is also capable of conjuring a personal frontal shield whenever an opponent decides to focus fire on them, protecting the frame from harm. The coverage of the shield depends on whether or not the Slam Cannon tendrils have been disabled or not, with the frontal shield protecting more of the Manticore whenever they are active. This shield can be disabled with shots to the Slam Cannon tendrils, active and exposed hands if the Cannons are disabled or simply unexpectedly flanking it can also disarm the shield; the shield will dissipate in time, so waiting out the shield is also viable. When an opponent visibly gets close to the Manticore, especially when its frontal shield is reaching its expiration, it can overcharge it and unleash a frontal blast of energy with it, damaging and Jolting any opponent caught in the blast.
