Ulysses Qiao[1] was a human taikonaut and part of the Ares One mission, the first manned spaceflight to Mars. Qiao, along with fellow astronauts Jacob Hardy and M. Mihaylova, would make first contact with the Traveler, beginning the Golden Age of Humanity.[2][3]

When the Traveler's appearance was first reported by global news sources, Qiao was in Sydney with his father, who was teaching at a local university. While the two were eating pizza in the university's Rathskeller, discussing Qiao's college plans, they saw a news report on a nearby television displaying drone footage of the Traveler taken from the edge of the Solar System.[4]
Eighteen days before the mission, Qiao gave Evie Calumet access to the Ares One shipboard AI systems, which M. Mihaylova had refused to do out of fear that she would disrupt the development of the precocious subroutine known as "R"; upon mentioning this to Mihaylova, the doctor simply responded that "what's done is done".[5]
