The mountain gales rip the struggling flag from its pole. Like the reaper's robes, it flies through the air, then, like cell walls, it closes on the prisoner crawling across the ground.

With great effort, he lifts his head to squint at the black object growing larger and larger as it flies towards him, only to close his eyes, accepting the inevitable. But the black flag, seemingly mocking him, flutters around his body instead. One of its corners brushes his shoulder for a fleeting moment before it disappears into the valley.

The prisoner looks back, confused. The flagpole is now bare. He touches his cheek, but both his face and hand have gone numb, simply bumping into each other like a couple of rocks. He needs to eat that arm on the ground before it freezes into an unchewable icicle.  He can see a bit of heat rising from the tendons—who knows if that's a hallucination, though.

The arm's former owner lies beside a stone beneath the flagpole, his throat emitting a slight wheeze reminiscent of damaged bellows. The prisoner had smashed his rib cage in with a rock, yet still, the man used his last breaths to taunt him.

"You won't survive [[Sangam-13/Rising|Sangam]]. Even if you eat my flesh, you're dying out here."

The rising steam is vanishing. He only has enough time to eat this one single arm.

''Is that me?'' Sangam mutters to himself as he stares blankly at the voracious prisoner beneath the cliff.

''THAT'S NOT ME!'' Sangam cries in response.

A sound seems to have caught the prisoner's attention. He looks to the sky for a long while, then closes his eyes. Voice low, he chants.

"Those who drink blood and consume flesh, who feast on lard, marrow, and limbs… Those who harbor wicked intention to end the life of others, who are bent on harmful ways, I entreat you to listen to my recitation of the Mahamayuri Vidyarajni Sutra. May you relinquish all maliciousness…"

''Even the most heinous of men yearn for redemption,'' the man with the severed arm sneers. Soon, though, his throat will be unable to utter more than a hiss, and after that, his voice will disappear completely.

''It's all fake—a nightmare!'' Sangam's angered cry is still clear amidst the wailing.

''This isn't fake,'' the other Sangam reminds him. ''Your body is resisting DER, resulting in spontaneous reset syndrome.''

''What you see is what he sees.''

Another Sangam appears behind him. ''You're not there, and he's not the 'you' of the present.''

Sangam whips his head around. Now, he's standing on a beach. Beneath his feet are sharp, fine rocks, small and motionless. They slice through the incoming waves, and the white sea foam grows thicker and thicker as the tides rise and fall. Now, there are twelve iron stakes emerging from the swell, and from them, twelve people hanging upside down. The crashing waves are high enough to submerge their chins. Sangam notices how pale and swollen their bodies are—they drowned some time ago.

A soldier, donning an iron helmet fashioned after an eagle's beak and carrying a rifle on his back, unsteadily approaches a row of rusty torture implements. He stomps heavily, ensuring he can stand firm against the tide's impact, then speaks in a muffled voice.

''Anyone changed their mind? Lord [[Delacas/Rising|Delacas]] is willing to spare the first person to tell us where the remaining conspirators are.''

One of the hanging men lets out intermittent sobs.

''I said, has anyone changed their mind?'' The soldier takes a step forward. He's caught on to the source of the cry.

But the sobs stop as soon as he gets near, and the man stills, letting the waves pour in and out from his nostrils.

This angers the soldier, who turns and walks to another stake. He draws his blade and glares at the [[Exo/Rising|Exo]] tied to it, then cleaves one of the metal plates from his thigh.

''What about you, Sangam? Don't play dead. I won't let you die so easily.''

The backflow of seawater will not drown him, and the glass of his skin will not let him succumb to infection or bleed out. Unfortunately for him, though, he can still feel the pain of being skinned, the fear of being submerged. His breaths start coming in heaves.

The soldier thinks he's going to say something and lowers his head to listen, but what he hears is a stammering chant—

"Protect me, that I may be free from all dangers, all distress, all diseases, all hunger, imprisonment, bondage, and other terrible places… Grant me the longevity of a hundred years, that I may see a hundred autumns…"

''This has long passed.'' Sangam pats Sangam's shoulder. The latter falls to his knees and lets the waves wash over him.

Make it stop… I'm begging you…

''All will end, then start anew.'' The other Sangam hands him a lotus with a gold peafowl motif on it. It's small, barely filling half his palm.
