History
Once the Raid Fireteam accessed the Pyramid, they would attempt to stop the Shadow Legion along with slowing the heartbeat of Nezarec himself. The Guardians would succeed in slowing the heartbeat of Nezarec and traverse towards the Scission. While they would empower the Tree of Silver Wings within the heart of the Pyramid, it would begin to terraform it, with the area of Cataclysm and the Disciple's tomb at the heart of it. It would also play as the final battle of Nezarec where he would fight against the Guardians who had helped in his resurrection.
Upon entering Essence through the terraformed opening in the hull, the Fireteam’s ships flew past Macrocosm as they landed at an archway overlooking the newly planted Tree of Silver wings in the distance.

The archway features Nezarec’s symbol, indicating that the following section of the Pyramid was dedicated to him. Upon passing through to find Nezarec’s tomb, it marked the Fireteam's entrance into Cataclysm. Traversing left, the behind of Nezarec’s tomb, with the Tree of Silver Wing’s root piercing through can be seen. As the root passes through the left side of the tomb and emerges on the right side (flipped when viewing the back), it is reshaped into a symbol often associated with ‘The Final Shape’ and the Witness. The symbol travels diagonally upwards and points to the Traveller, which the Witness entered in the week prior to the Raid on the Pyramid. While it is unknown what the symbol represents, it may be Nezarec’s interpretation of The Final Shape, through the language or symbolism of the Witness. Theories also suggest it may be the Traveller indicating what the Witness was doing inside of the Pale heart; perhaps trying to signal through it's root.

Travelling downwards, past a statue of Nezarec, to the main temple complex housing him and his tomb, leads underneath and around the side to a root that had grown from the temple’s wall. The root acts as a way up to the floor featuring Nezarec. When on this root, Scission can be seen to the left, the Tree of Silver Wing’s straight ahead, and Macrocosm off in the distance to the right. Upon reaching the top of the root, the Fireteam jumps off to the right, and sees the full tomb housing Nezarec, and an area they will become familiar with. Nezarec's tomb is featured above a stand featuring his symbol. The bottom of the tomb is a block of amber, where Nezarec's head and shoulders can be seen within the encasement, with a small network of nerves coming from it. The amber continues upwards in a straight line, with sides made of Pyramid architecture. The right side of the Pyramid architecture is slightly broken, with chunks of the tomb suspended next to it.

Greeting the Fireteam is a seed of energy referred to as the Node of Splendor. Guardians are tasked to ‘Survive the Onslaught; Fight for control and stay alive’. Upon connecting Nodes of Splendor using the Field of Light to flowers, that connect back into the root piercing Nezarec’s tomb, a flash of Light energy can be seen passing through the tomb. After a Node set is completed, Light energy can be seen travelling from the connected root as it moves through.

Adherents of Torment (Psions who support Nezarec) as well as Cavum’s of Nezarec (Tormentors that appear after the death of the Psions) assist in the fight. The Tormentors are likely some form of manifested Hatred sent by Nezarec as a result of the pain caused by the Psion’s death. Upon the Tormentor’s death, Nezarec’s Hatred, which manifests itself as a pulse of energy building up from the bottom of his tomb upwards, is delayed allowing the Fireteam more time to connect the Nodes. The Tormentor’s death likely severs Nezarec's power temporarily, disrupting the little energy he is able to manifest through his Hatred.

Once 4 sets of Nodes have been connected, Nezarec’s Hatred is halted, as he remarks about the sensations of the Light surging through him. The Fireteam then enters the complex behind Cataclysm known as Scission, where they continue the Raid.

---------------------

Cataclysm is passed through 3 times during the Raid. The first is during the entrance and first Encounter.

The second is after Scission and the first major root, where the Fireteam must traverse the now broken apart Cataclysm in order to reach the Macrocosm and next root. Nezarec’s tomb now periodically releases a pulsating wave of energy, indicating that his revival is in progress. The wave of energy mirrors that of a slow heartbeat, likely from the mixture of Light and Dark being unable to be contained by his body. His Hatred can no longer be prevented through the death of a Tormentor suggesting that Nezarec is growing in strength. Cataclysm is now filled with Nodes of Decay and Nodes of Splendor, as a result of the energy release upon connecting the energies in the root prior.

The third and final iteration of Cataclysm is after Macrocosm and the second major root, where the area is situated higher in the air by the roots and unrecognisable. There is no longer a pulse of energy as Nezarec’s body now holds both energies. Cataclysm serves as the arena for the final battle against a newly revived Nezarec, as well as his most recent resting place.

Cataclysm refers not only to the initial impact of the Traveller’s attack, but also the area as a whole. The name represents the sudden, violent onset of change that occurs multiple times during the Raid.
