From Destinypedia, the Destiny wiki
Gameplay mechanics are the rules, systems, and interactions that guide a player's actions in a game. They are the foundation of a game, determining how it functions and what makes it successful. Below are some fanfiction mechanics based on the ones found in the main space of Destinypedia which are the ones found in game both in Destiny and Destiny 2. As well as any found in NetEase's Destiny: Rising.
Modifiers
Modifiers are gameplay mechanics that make PvE activities more challenging by adding a new level of difficulty. Modifiers are typically randomly applied for special missions. Modifiers can be applied to normal Story missions by changing the difficulty and raising the level of the mission.

- Doom Harbinger - There is a chance of a Harbinger Subjugator in this mission keep on your toes

Critical Modifiers
Critical Modifiers are rare, powerful paracausal effects that arise when the forces of Light and Darkness violently clash, warping the rules of survival within an area. These modifiers alter how abilities, resources, and tactics function, creating encounters where standard solutions are unreliable and failure carries severe consequences. Critical Modifiers may appear in any type of Darkness Zone, but are most commonly found in Oppressive Darkness Zones, where the Light is nearly extinguished and the risk of total party kill or permanent character loss is highest. Each Critical Modifier is unique to the mission or location in which it appears and does not recur unless explicitly stated.
