There's a crackle as the laboratory's emergency light flickers on, followed by the whirring sound of the vent turning back on. Because the backup power cannot support the fan's normal speed, however, the sound is more grating than usual.

[[Signar/Rising|Signar]] takes off the polarizers and sighs as he turns his gaze up to the audience in the observation room.

"Alright, ladies and gentlemen. I think that's enough for today." Signar hears someone letting out a sigh of their own in the corner, but he can't see who it is. "The residential zone requires the minimum power supply for the next two hours. After that comes the industrial zone. I suggest we get something to eat and get some sleep before they finish."

[[Viktor-8/Rising|Viktor-8]] raises a hand, though there is seemingly no vigor behind the motion. "Sir, I don't need to eat or rest, soooo…" He intentionally lengthens the last syllable, hinting at his dissatisfaction.

As he speaks, two people at the other end of the room stand up to leave the shadows and walk into the glow of the emergency light.

"Signar. The SoE Council is holding an impromptu hearing to shut down your project. You know this, don't you?" [[Nakamura/Rising|Nakamura]] says. Signar, however, doesn't respond.

Outside the observation window at the other end of the room, streetlights illuminate and people emerge from the low houses lining the roads. Some head to the water station, others stand in place to gaze up at the sky—not that there is anything to see. If the residents took a moment to adjust to their dim environment and relaxed their eyes, they would easily discover that their "sky" was actually a gray armored plate. Now, the thousands of massive fans in said plate waking up, giving the residential zone a rare chance to breathe in air from above ground. On this side of the laboratory, Signar can see the "[[Project Clotho/Rising|Clotho]]" he is so proud of. He watches as the metallic, champagne-colored dome fades into the darkness. The searchlights dim one after the other, and a red light turns on at the building's entrance—a sign that the entire facility is in an energy-conserving state of emergency. Engineers cross the narrow bridge side by side, pouring out into the residential zone to enjoy their precious break time.

"I'll bet there are those among them cursing you as we speak," [[Eileen/Rising|Eileen]] says with a sneer.

"It's been 151 days since Clotho began operation, Signar," Nakamura says as he opens a drawer and pulls out several bags of rations. He motions for the other three to join him at the table for their meal. "If I were a member of the council, I too would want to hear you explain your 'miscalculation.' We lost sixty-five teams—nearly two hundred lives."

"As I explained to the council at the first information session, the flow of time one experiences differs once they enter the Clotho tunnel," Signar says in a hollow voice.

"You sent the council's last and best fireteam in there." Eileen motions for the remaining three to wait a moment. She summons a small flame at her fingertip and uses it to heat the paste-like rations until they're bubbling. "Even with a lack of weapons and a destroyed arsenal, those [[Lightbearer/Rising|Lightbearers]] were not a force to be underestimated. They were the last card we could play."

"I told you in the very beginning that sending people out there to find weapons was a ludicrous idea—" Viktor-8's words have begun to turn venomous, but Nakamura quickly interrupts him with a finger pointed at his face. "Watch it!"

"Right. Why don't we teleport in [[Saladin/Rising|Saladin]]? Or [[Saint-14/Rising|Saint-14]], or [[Radegast/Rising|Radegast]]? Use Clotho to teleport in [[Wolf/Rising|Wolf]]—the most legendary veteran of them all, savior of the world, and—" Signar's excitement sends spittle flying into the rations. Eileen, now feeling queasy, gives up on her meal, instead returning to the sofa in the shadows and sitting down with an angered huff.

Signar shows no signs of stopping. "How many times have I explained this to the council? Ten? Fifteen?! Our universe doesn't revolve around a few legends! And it's not us—the 'technical authorities,' as you call us—who have the final say! That's an objective law, not subject to humanity's subjective will! Were you not present, Viktor?"

"How do we fix the consciousness anchor point? How do we eliminate bubbles of causality?

Who takes legal and moral responsibility for contaminating the timelines? Do we have any choice that isn't taking tide-turning weapons from other timelines?!"

A blaring alarm interrupts Signar's fervent statement. Shocked, the four of them nearly simultaneously return to their operating positions, while engineers come from all directions to rush down the bridge and back to the dome-shaped building below them. The alarms ring throughout the residential zone, repeating the same warning over and over.

"Warning. This is an emergency. Now cutting residential zone power. Please back away from high-voltage appliances."

With trembling hands, Signar dons his polarizers again. When he speaks, he cannot conceal the mixture of excitement and worry in his voice. "Victor, give me the latest readings." Viktor's voice is shaky as he replies. "We have detected a fourth level boson oscillation, with a 99.975% probability of similarity in cross-sectional folds. Teleporter identity confirmed—Fireteam 32. Their target was The Huckleberry."

"Initiate extraction." Nakamura clenches his fists for some semblance of control as the waves on the oscilloscope before him begin melding together. "Let's bring them home."
