'''Evocators''' are one of the units that make up the troops of the [[The Dread|Dread]]. They are nimble entities that wield powerful artifacts and [[Paracausality|Paracausal]] empowerment abilities.

==Overview==
Evocators are thin, spindly, vaguely humanoid constructs with long arms and black claws with three fingers, along with their fingers and toes being webbed. Similar to [[Subjugator]]s, the faces are metallic and featureless, save for a small yellow light emanating from their head. They notably wear a cloak similar to those worn by the [[Husk]]s and [[the Caretaker]].

Like other Dread, Evocators were created by the [[The Witness|Witness]] using the [[The Traveler|Traveler's]] [[Light]]. In one instance, Venme, a member of [[Xivu Arath's Horde]], took part in a ritual to be transformed into an Evocator, having her body and mind reshaped by the memory of a [[Forum:Quassin|species]] the Witness recalled from a [[Forum:Tivon|member]] preserved in its collective memory. Following the Witness's death within the [[Pale Heart]], like the rest of the Dread, the Evocators would become lost and be drawn to the wielders of the [[Echo (object)|Echoes]] and any other powerful wielders of Dark power, including [[Fikrul, the Fanatic|Fikrul]], the [[Lord of Every Nothing]], [[Kerrev, the Erased|Kerrev]], [[Forum:Xal Tinar|Xal Tinar]] and [[Forum:Ouranos, Prismatic Mind|Ouranos]].

==Gameplay==
Much like [[Grim]], Evocators are capable of levitation and are very nimble on the battlefield, seemingly swimming through the air. Its main method of attack is firing bolts of Arc energy from its Discordant Refraction. If a Guardian gets too close to melee them, they can use it as a melee weapon. Occasionally, they will thrust their Refraction upward to create an Arc storm, sending bolts of Arc Energy that can partially track Guardians. They can also slam it on the ground to create a pulse capable of temporarily blinding any Guardians looking directly at them.

However, the most notable thing about Evocators is their support capabilities. They can empower their allies through Voltic Empowerment to boost their speed and attack. The effect is doubled for enemies with Arc Weapons and Abilities such as most [[Fallen]], [[Hive]] [[Thrall]] and [[Wizard]]s and [[Scorn]] [[Abomination]]s. This will be indicated to players when they begin to draw energy from their Refraction into their other hand which they will crush, dispersing the energy to all enemies in the vicinity. This can be interrupted by either a powerful shot to the Evocator's head or certain Guardian abilities that [[Void|suppress]], [[Stasis|freeze]] or [[Strand|suspend]].

==Evocator's Bond==

Resonant memory lines the material of this armor. Imprinted within the folds of forged protection lies the flayed origin of the Dread.

The glow of [[Soulfire]] illuminates the walls of a cavern deep in the [[The Transgression|Transgression]]. The stink of acrid vanilla hangs in the air as a gathering of [[Acolyte]]s carve a ritual circle into the dirt. Venme hovers above them in the circle's center. Above her, a  [[Pyramid]]al opening lies waiting.

Venme knows what is to come. She is to be transformed into a new form, broken down while she is still alive and reformed into something new in a violent metamorphosis. But she is not afraid. 

Nothing of worth comes without pain. It is a lesson she had known since she was a [[Thrall]]. She had seen it as she grew, as those around her begged their [[Oryx, the Taken King|king]] for the honor of being [[Taken]], as her [[Hidden Swarm|swarm]] failed to find a new leader through plots and bloodsports until they submitted to the [[Xivu Arath, God of War|God of War]]. Through it all, they became something strong. What she will become now will be no different.

With the circle completed, the Acolytes kneel around it. With [[Shredder]]s laid flat in bony palms, they start to chant. Venme raises her arms and splays her claws, awaiting the coming transformation. Her eyes close and she ascends as the circle under her glows a [[Darkness#Resonance|Resonant]] orange.

Enveloped…

The cavern and Acolytes crumble away, leaving her suspended in a black void that reaches into infinity.

A voice pierces the Darkness… 

"From you, long service to our [[Final Shape|purpose]], cutting the universe down until the strongest remain. For you, a new shape carved by our hand."

Venme flinches as she feels the fingers of many hands dig into her body. They slowly pry her chitin back like the shell of a crustacean, exposing her true self for the initial cuts. Scalpels slicked sharp by the Sky slice at her flesh and mind.

"We free you from hunger. You will not need it to be strong."

A swift cut reveals the worm cowering in Venme's chest. A hand plunges into her screaming body and tears the squirming thing free. It melts to slurry in Its grasp.

"In its place, we offer a piece of ourselves."

The voice whispers a fragment of a soul into the cavity; a flicker from a conquered people now wiped from memory. One that knew of a link to other minds before their integration.

The work continues. The knife carves old flesh into a new form, shaving each potential shape away one-by-one.

The minds are picked through, in search of what was worthy of being part of their new shape. The knowledge to conjure power and the feeling of loyalty to their creator are among those that remain. Most are consigned to irrelevance.

"Know the totality of our goal. See beyond the shallow understanding of killing until one remains."

The old chitin crumbles to dust as the new form takes their first breath.

"Ameliorate, so that the final shape shall come for all."

The being that shares the mind of Venme looks up from the bottom of a rock canyon and observes a distorted shape in the branches of a silver tree―a thin, three-eyed creature with a pointed head and mouth open in an endless cry. Something about it feels familiar, but they don't know why. They never know why. Did they serve it once, or did it raze their world?

A collection of shrieks close by snaps them to attention. [[Lucent Brood|Soldiers of the Traveler]] approach, led by a [[Lightbearer Wizard|flowing figure]] with [[Arc]] power crackling at their claws. 

The sight of these interlopers fills them with a distant sense of recognition and anger, a burning remnant of Venme. With chants in the Knife's tongue, Arc energy flows to their open palm from the prism. A closed fist disperses the energy to their allies, empowering them. The shrieks of allies and enemies echo through the canyon and mix with the boom of [[Slug Rifle]] and Shredder fire in a cacophony of violence. The thought of what once was is buried beneath implanted reflex and gives way to focus on the now.
