The Crash is the first story mission in Shattered Past and takes place in the Desert on Earth. After crashing in the Desert under unknown circumstances, the player's unconscious body is hauled from the wreckage of their ship, and awakens to the sight of several Rangers who invite the amnesiac pilot to join them on their way to a remote colony to investigate why it has dropped out of contact with the Protectorate's array stations.

  • Narrator: What is the sum of human curiosity, but a yearning to venture into the unknown? To uncover some forbidden secret in the hopes that it will lead to something greater? For hundreds of years, humans had looked up into the sky, peering out at the stars, wondering what lay beyond. As technology progressed, these dreams of exploration grew ever closer. Great ships were built to take us into the stars, to carry us into the deep. We turned our sights to the dead worlds that lay before us. The promises of a new empire, a new age. Colonization efforts were undertaken on Mars and centuries passed as humanity terraformed its barren deserts. But buried within the red sands, lie the dormant husks of ancient machines called Praetorians.

{Cutscene} The screen fades to black. The screen fades in and then to black again a few times to simulate the effect of eyes opening. Meanwhile, unintelligible voices can be heard.
