For hundreds of years, humans had looked up into the sky, wondering what lay beyond. As technology progressed, the means to fulfill these curiosities grew ever closer. Great ships were built to take us into the stars and eventually the deep. We turned our sights then to the dead worlds that lay before us. The promises of a new empire, a new age. Colonization efforts were undertaken on Mars and centuries passed as humanity terraformed its barren deserts. But buried within the red sands, lie the dormant husks of ancient machines, constructed for a terrible purpose.

{Video}

The screen fades into a view of a vast desert. The text "EARTH" and "25TH CENTURY" appear in the left hand corner of the screen. A team of Rangers are seen treking across the wastes. The Rangers pause atop a sand dune to survey the terrain when a ship crashes in the distance. The Rangers see the crash and head towards it.

The screen cuts to black

A view of Earth from space. A commercial plays in the background as hundreds of people wait on a long line at a facility with the Exodus Logo. In the distance, dozens of colony ships can be seen. The screen cuts to a scene of colonists boarding the ships as families say goodbye to their loved ones. As the ships take off, the scene switches to the colony ships drifting to Mars, then black. The next scene opens with the hatch of a colony ship lifting as the first colonists dismount and children rush into the newly remade world when suddenly everyone is awestruck by the alien landscape; alien structures dominate the skyline and security teams begin urging the colonists to return to the shuttles just as a security unit is shot by an energy bolt. Hundreds of machine units begin swarming across the landscape as the video ends.

{Cutscene}

The screen fades in and then to black a few times to simulate the effect of eyes opening. Meanwhile, unintelligible voices can be heard.

  • [Unknown]: Look, he's coming to.
  • [Unknown]: Hey, hey you alright?

The pilot slowly sits himself up, looking towards the female Ranger kneeling beside him and groans.

  • Pilot: What--what happened? Where am I?
  • [Unknown]: Easy. We're in the Desert, your ship was shot down - though it is hard to tell by whom - and you crashed. A band of those damned mercenaries may have been responsible for your ship's downing, but then they would have already come to loot the wreckage by now.
  • [Unknown]: Can you stand?
  • Pilot: I think so.

A male Ranger offers the pilot a hand, helping him to his feet.

  • [Unknown]: Do you remember anything prior to the crash?
  • Pilot: Just fragments, but they're all scrambled. Who are you?
  • [Unknown]: That's [redacted], [redacted], [redacted] and I am [redacted]. We were en route to a nearby settlement when we saw your ship crash.

Just then, [redacted] approaches.

  • [Unknown]: Sir, we should get moving. If the colony's communications systems have indeed malfunctioned, we need to restore them pronto.
  • [Unknown]: It'll be fine a moment. We'll get there soon enough.

The Ranger leader turns to the Pilot.

  • [Unknown]: Why not come with us?

The Pilot looks at the burning wreckage of their ship and back at the Rangers.

  • Pilot:Don't think I have a choice.

The Pilot then beckons with his hand in a forward motion.

  • Pilot: Lead the way.

The Rangers begin walking and the screen fades to black.

{Gameplay}

  • [Unknown]: Okay, the colony is situated just north of here. If we can cross this desert, we can get there fairly quickly.

The Pilot follows the Rangers.
