Prior to their name being officially announced at the 2013 GDC, they were referred to as "evil space zombies". This suggests that they are a form of "undead;" However, their bones are too big to be human, too small to be Cabal, and without enough arms to be Fallen, making their species a mystery. [1]

Additionally, a Hive Mini-Boss, named "Phogoth" appears as an objective in a mission given to players.[2]
