The Witness's origins began billions of years ago, where the struggling proto-race that became the Witness stumbled upon the Traveler, half-buried on their homeworld. The Traveler uplifted their civilization and lead them into a Golden Age that lasted millions of years, but still found themselves lacking a greater purpose in the universe as they believed that unlimited growth without guidance would bring destruction. The proto-race set out to find a Winnower which could cut away unwanted creation and discovered the Veil, an object that has aspects of both the Light and the Darkness and eventually found it. As they brought it back to their homeworld and by proxy the Traveler, it rejected the presence of the Veil and fled. Saddened by the lost of their greatest benefactor, the proto-race set out to acquire the ultimate forms of both Light and Dark to ensure absolute control over the universe in which they could perfectly design every aspect of it. The proto-race then merged every single member of their species into one being, christening themselves the Witness and began their quest to find the Traveler.
The Witness' origins can be traced back billions of years ago, to an ancient species of humanoid beings who discovered the Traveler half-buried on their homeworld. The Traveler uplifted their civilization and led them into a Golden Age that lasted millions of years. However, while the Traveler granted the civilization great prosperity and was revered as a life-giving deity, it never spoke to its patrons or offered them guidance. As a result, the civilization came to desire purpose and meaning, seeking a "winnower" that would impose order and structure on an otherwise open-ended and meaningless existence. They also came to view the power associated with the Traveler as a fundamentally chaotic and capricious force, observing that it brought calamity just as easily as it brought prosperity.

In a distant star system, the civilization eventually found the Veil, an object connected to the Traveler, but whose power was a polar opposite to that of the Light they knew so well. In studying the Veil, they discovered that by pairing its powers with that of the Traveler, they could alter reality itself and achieve the meaningful existence they so desired: an eternal, perfected version of the universe they called the Final Shape.

The civilization brought the Veil back to their homeworld and attempted to link it with the Traveler, but the Travler rejected the presence of the Veil and fled. The civilization responded by using the Darkness to merge the minds of every single member of their species into a singular entity: the Witness.
