Trials and Tribulations
The Endless Night
Expand-section
As the Endless Night settled in on the Last City, the Warlock Vanguard Ikora authorised the settlement of Eliksni refugees from the House of Light in the Botza District, naming it the Eliksni Quarter. This move angered many within the Last City, not the least Saint-14. Due to his history of combating the Fallen in the early days of the City Age, he refused to trust their presence within the walls he had barred their kind from previously. As a method to ease this distrust, Ikora assigned him to help with deliveries of Eliksni goods sent by the Spider, alongside Amanda Holliday. Though working beside them, he complained they were unable to trust him, though recognised that he felt the same way towards them.

As the Endless Night ground onwards, a conspiracy unfolded within the Consensus. Lakshmi-2 and Executor Hideo, of Future War Cult and New Monarchy respectively, spoke with Dead Orbit's leader Arach Jalaal about forming a united front in the face of perceived Vanguard weakness. They needed to secure support within City authorities, ruling out figures such as Saladin Forge for his attachments to Zavala. Thanks to his known issues with the Fallen, and his popularity amongst the people, they targeted Saint-14 as a recruit to the plot to overthrow the current Vanguard leadership.

Later on, Lakshmi-2 and Executor Hideo sought out Saint-14 to initiate his recruitment. They found him wandering a deserted street of the City, spending time contemplating with his beloved pigeons. Their offer of becoming a figurehead for a new regime was initially rejected by Saint, as he considered it a foolish maneuver. Firstly, he appeared to believe in the leadership of the City, and secondly, he remarked he was no politician. He decided against providing a definitive answer at that time, and mentioned he wished to speak with Osiris. He parted company with the Consensus conspirators and went his own way, with the conspirators worried that he may tell Ikora or Zavala, to their ruin.

The Endless Night
At a point, a sabotage attack is made upon the Eliksni Quarter, by a group of Last City civilians unhappy with the presence of the Eliksni. To attempt to bring Saint-14 closer to the Eliksni, Ikora tasks Saint-14 with investigating this sabotage. However, he fails to find any witnesses that will speak to him, and mentions that it is all too much to expect people to live beside the monsters they have fought for centuries. In riposte to this, Mithrax relays how the Eliksni feel about Saint-14, colouring him one of the greatest dangers for their race. An unrelentingly violent, undying nightmare, a figure the Eliksni are all educated about from a young age. This causes Saint-14 to begin thinking twice about his words and actions, understanding the perspective of the Eliskni. He begins working alongside Mithrax, aiding in the effort to end the Endless Night.

Eventually, Lakshmi-2's madness and paranoia takes full hold, and she summons an army of Vex to attack the Eliksni Quarter. Ever the stout defender, Saint-14 is there to hold back the swarm and protect Eliskni lives, arm in arm with Mithrax. From this experience, a powerful friendship is born between the two former foes. At the memorial for the lost for the Vex attack, Saint-14 and Mithrax exchange words regarding this newfound alliance between races, with Mithrax providing encouragement towards Saint-14 to find his fugitive partner, now under suspicion of enabling Lakshmi-2's plot.

They found Osiris meeting with Queen Mara Sov and Saint told him that he must return with them to the Last City and answer for his actions, but that he was sure the Vanguard would show mercy. Osiris mockingly stated that Zavala and Ikora were generous, pointing out to Mara how Crow had been welcomed among them, but Crow told Osiris that he could still be forgiven. The three Guardians watched as Osiris backed away and responded that he would hold them to that as his voice and body began to transform. Saint shouted in horror as it was revealed that Savathûn had replaced Osiris when Sagira was killed. Mara used her power to contain the Hive queen within stone while Saint was enraged by this revelation and demanded to know where Osiris was. Mara told him that his partner still lived and that she and Savathûn had come to a bargain. In exchange for Osiris' safe return, the Awoken and Guardians would help her remove her Worm and protect her from her sister Xivu Arath, who was hunting her for betraying the Black Fleet. Saint warned the God of Deception that she had better be telling the truth before departing to inform the Vanguard of what had transpired while the Young Wolf and Crow stayed to further discuss the situation with Mara.

In his desperation to remove Savathûn's leverage of the safety of Osiris, Saint-14 seeks out Mithrax's assistance in tracking down Sagira's place of death as a first step to finding the wayward Warlock. Mithrax suggests they check Vex records for any mention of a Ghost death, and they go off together to Europa. Saint expresses his relief to have Mithrax by his side in his search, which Mithrax reciprocates. Engaging a Vex Mind to obtain the necessary components for a splice, Saint summons a Ward of Dawn around Mithrax and begins his work, dismantling all Vex in the area.
Despite their best efforts, the Exo and Eliksni alliance could not locate Osiris, but Saint-14 was eventually reunited with Osiris after the conclusion of the exorcism of Savathûn's worm. The Witch Queen held her promise, though Osiris was left in a catatonic state. Saint-14 would remain in the Last City, tending to his comatose lover, hoping one day to see him rise again, the phoenix to his pigeon.
