The | The Witness's origins began billions of years ago, where the struggling proto-race that became the Witness stumbled upon the Traveler, half-buried on their homeworld. The Traveler uplifted their civilization and lead them into a Golden Age that lasted millions of years, but still found themselves lacking a greater purpose in the universe as they believed that unlimited growth without guidance would bring destruction. The proto-race set out to find a Winnower which could cut away unwanted creation and discovered the Veil, an object that has aspects of both the Light and the Darkness and eventually found it. As they brought it back to their homeworld and by proxy the Traveler, it rejected the presence of the Veil and fled. Saddened by the lost of their greatest benefactor, the proto-race set out to acquire the ultimate forms of both Light and Dark to ensure absolute control over the universe in which they could perfectly design every aspect of it.
