Cutscene

The Guardian's Jumpship, the Wanderwing comes gently over the hill, slowing down as it drops The Guardian off on a hill outside Quarantine Zone 236. As the Wanderwing takes back off into the sky the camera tracks towards the hulking wreck of the Shard of the Traveler looming in the background, deep inside the European Dead Zone.

  • Suraya Hawthorne: You sure you want to do this? That Shard is the reason this place is called a “Dead Zone.”
  • Ghost: We have to, Hawthorne. It’s a sign.
  • Hawthorne: Yeah a sign that says, “Dead Zone.”

Gameplay

Quarantine Sector 236 - Restricted Zone

  • Find a way to the Shard of the Traveler
Enter the quarantine zone

The Guardian transmats into Quarantine Sector 236 on a hill outside the walls of the Quarantine Zone and begins making their way towards the entrance.

  • Hawthorne: You know, I’ve been all over the EDZ. Charming enough. I mean nothing says “come visit” like a dark, haunted forest.
  • Hawthorne: Here’s the thing about City rules – they stop applying once you leave the City.
  • Hawthorne: There’s a small gap in the wall. Hard to see, but it’s there. Nobody goes farther than that. At least nobody that wants to come back.

The wall has collapsed, blocking access along the road, forcing the player to divert through the rubble to the side of the entrance. If the player delays moving on:

  • Hawthorne: Duck under the car. It's a tight fit but you can slip through. At least I can. Then again, I don't wear all that fancy armor.

The player moves through the wall, ducking under the car and other rubble and exiting out the other side. Beyond the wall the road continues leading the player into a tunnel where it ends once more in a pile of collapsed stone. A small hole in the wall to the side opens into a dark cave which the player starts walking through.

  • Hawthorne: Let me know when you’ve [static].
  • Ghost: Hawthorne? Hawthorne! Can you hear us? Signal’s dead.

  • Find a way to the Shard of the Traveler
Venture deeper in the quarantine zone

The cave continues into a large cavern full of stalagmites and stalactites. Fallen scurry out of sight as the player approaches, preparing an ambush to introduce the concept of stealth and invisibility to the player.

  • Ghost: Did you hear something?

The player enters the cavern and is ambushed by the Fallen Marauders.

  • Ghost: [It’s – the Fallen!{Veterans}|We're under attack!{New player accounts}]

The Fallen are defeated.

  • Ghost: [Those Fallen weren’t wearing any house colors we’ve seen before.{Veterans}|Those things were the Fallen – scavengers from another world. They worship machines.{New player accounts}]

The player continues on, exiting the cave into the remains of a mining facility.

Blackened Forest

The player proceeds through the ruined building, encountering a regular loot cache for the first time, receiving some Glimmer and the Auto Rifle Pariah. After being introduced to the loot and reward concepts the player continues on, exiting the building as the Shard of the Traveler comes into sight.

  • Get to the Shard of the Traveler
Fight your way through the forest.

  • Ghost: The Shard of the Traveler. This is it. Right out of our vision.

The player proceeds through the forest, fighting through the Fallen and around a massive pit on their way to the Shard. The player is introduced to more Fallen units, the Dreg, Vandal, and Wretch. Loot begins to drop from enemies from this point onward.

  • Find a way to the Shard of the Traveler
Push back the Fallen to venture deeper into the quarantine zone

The player reaches the area in front of the Shard, which is occupied by a makeshift Fallen camp.

  • Get to the Shard of the Traveler
Push back the Fallen forces around the Shard.

The player is confronted by Tikkis, Diminished Scrapper. After the player kills Tikkis, more fallen appear, led by Maksor, Starving Scavenger. The player kills Maksor as well.

  • Ghost: I think we… scared them away. Take me to the Shard.

Cutscene

The Guardian approaches the Shard, Ghost held out, ready to receive the Light. Ghost floats into the air, close to the Shard as the music builds.

  • Ghost: This is why we were led here. I haven’t been this close to the Traveler’s Light since…
  • Ghost: Do you feel it?

The Shard begins to glow as Ghost turns around to face The Guardian.

  • Ghost: Hold onto your helmet.

A beam of Light from the Shard charges Ghost up, and he immediately channels the energy into the Guardian who starts to glow with power. Ghost, energized, starts racing excitedly around the player in triumphant circles.

  • Ghost: Do you feel it? The light is back! We’re back!
  • Ghost: Eyes up, Guardian.

{End Cutscene}

Gameplay

The player now has access to the Sentinel, Arcstrider or Dawnblade subclass depending on their class.

  • Use the Light
Use your newly regained powers to lay waste to the Fallen

The area is filled with pools of Light that quickly give the player a full super via a buff called “Boundless Light”. More Fallen appear so that the player may test their rediscovered abilities.

  • Ghost: Let’s light ’em up. / Hold onto your helmet.

The former Wolf Baron, Skriviks, the Sharp-Eyed appears, leading the Fallen counterattack against the player to reclaim the Shard.

Skriviks and the last of the Fallen are defeated.

{End Gameplay}

Trivia

  • The Cabal Thresher that has crashed into the Blackened Forest only a short distance before the Shard was likely shot down by the Fallen who have now draped the banner of House of Dusk over the wreck. This suggests the Red Legion is attempting to seize the Shard in the EDZ, explaining their presence in the region, but are being denied control of it by the Fallen, and subsequently the Guardians.
  • In the area immediately in front of the Shard is a large and prominently displayed House of Judgment banner, hinting at the role of the House of Judgment inside the united Fallen house, the House of Dusk, which is also shown in this mission to include former House of Wolves members such Skriviks, the Sharp-Eyed, and is implied elsewhere to also include former House of Devils and House of Winter members. The full meaning of the banner's display is not known, but when combined with its purpose as a "threat" or warning, as described by Devrim Kay in EDZ-TL-4, and the fact that the Fallen were in control of the Shard and were defending it against incursions by the Cabal and Guardians, suggests that perhaps they had also received a vision from the Shard and were seeking to be reestablish a connection to the Light.
  • The name of The Blackened Forest, combined with the area's setting in the European Dead Zone and signage and place-names written in German, is likely a reference to the Black Forest in the state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany.
  • The widespread presence of floating stones throughout the Blackened Forest as a result of the Shard of the Traveler and either the power of the Light or of the Corruption inside it has curious parallels in the floating stones seen in some Hive locations, particularly Titan. Ghost Scans TM-TA-2 and TM-SD-3 both describe the floating rocks as the byproduct of Hive magic and the weakening of boundaries between worlds. This raises numerous questions in their relation to the Shard of the Traveler.
