The Solar System as depicted in the Director
The Solar System (also called the Sol system) is the planetary system inhabited by humanity. During the Golden Age, humanity forged an empire that spanned much of the system, but the catastrophic effects of the Collapse forced humans to retreat to Earth, abandoning their many worlds to various other forces.
The planets (and possibly the sun) of the Solar System are each associated with one of the dark-matter based intelligences that collectively make up the Nine.
Notable celestial bodies
- The Sun—the system's native star and an implied member of the Nine.
- Mercury—a former garden world, now converted by the Vex into a planet-sized machine. Member of the Nine.[1]
- Venus—a volcanic jungle world and the site of the Ishtar Academy, humanity's greatest center of learning. Now occupied by the Vex and the Fallen House of Winter. Member of the Nine.[2]
- Earth—mankind's homeworld. The only safe human settlement is The Last City, with pockets of hidden human communities. The Fallen House of Devils and House of Kings control the rest of the planet. Member of the Nine.[3]
- The Moon—Earth's only natural satellite. Once the site of a small colony for supplying the rest of the system, now the location of the Hive's stronghold, with a minor House of Exile presence.[4]
- Mars—the first human city outside of Earth, Freehold, was founded here. Now occupied by the Cabal, who are fighting invading Vex forces for control. Member of the Nine.[5]
- The Black Garden—a Vex realm accessible from and tied to Mars.[6]
- Phobos—one of Mars's two moons. Phobos was controlled by the Cabal until the Taken invaded and destroyed the Cabal outpost.[7]
- Asteroid Belt—a ring of asteroids and Golden Age debris marking the boundary between the Inner System and the Outer System.[8]
- Ceres—the largest object in the Asteroid Belt. Ceres was a major hub of the House of Wolves before it was destroyed by Queen Mara Sov's Harbingers.[9]
- The Reef—an inhabited collection of asteroids and derelicts that are the home of the Awoken. Asteroids with Awoken settlements include 4 Vesta, 2 Pallas, 10 Hygiea, 65 Cybele, and 5560 Amytis.[10]
- Jupiter—a gas giant. Its moons are believed to have been a major cornerstone of Golden Age civilization; now controlled by the Nine. Member of the Nine.[11]
- Saturn—a gas giant. Oryx's Dreadnaught and a Hive fleet now orbit the planet. Member of the Nine.[12]
- Hyperion—a moon of Saturn, mentioned to have traded with Titan, and was home to some Ishtar scientists.
- Rhea—a moon of Saturn, mentioned to be under control of the Nine.
- Telesto—a moon notable for attracting Harbinger matter after the Battle of Saturn.
- Titan—a methane ocean moon. The Hive and the Fallen lurk around the moon.
- Nessus—a dormant Vex Machine World that is also under Red Legion occupation.
- Uranus—seventh planet from the sun, member of the Nine.
- Neptune—eighth planet from the sun, member of the Nine.
- Pluto—a dwarf planet on the edge of the system. (possible member of the Nine if the sun is not)
Transdimensional Realms
- Ascendant realm—an ancient, eldritch alternate dimension that is ruled over by entities empowered by the Sword Logic, such as the Hive and Scorn.
- Unknown Space—a mysterious dimension controlled by the Nine.
- Distributary—a pocket universe that is home to the first Awoken. A portal to it is in orbit around the sun.
Trivia
The bodies of the Solar System are not based on real-world scans, as per gameplay/enjoyment priorities.[13]
