Grenade

From Destinypedia, the Destiny wiki

A Grenade is a type of Ability used by Guardians and enemies alike.

Gameplay

Guardians

Grenades are one of the three core aspects of a Guardian's Class and Subclass, alongside Super and Melee abilities. Grenades are normally thrown a certain distance, and detonate upon hitting the ground or a foe, usually inflicting Elemental damage in an explosion, and often applying other effects, depending on the Subclass. In Destiny, Grenades were restricted per Class, with one shared, but in current Destiny 2, all Grenades are shared across Classes.

Grenade cooldowns are modified by Discipline. The effects of Grenades can be further modified by passive abilities, Aspects and Fragments. Several Mods and Exotics also alter or benefit from Grenades.

A Solar Grenade in action

  • Swarm Grenade: A grenade that detonates on impact, releasing multiple drones that seek nearby enemies. Each drone slightly scorches affected targets.
  • Tripmine Grenade: An explosive grenade that sticks to surfaces and detonates when enemies pass through its laser trigger, dealing damage and moderately scorching them.
  • Healing Grenade: A grenade that cures allies on impact and creates an Orb of benevolent Solar Light, granting restoration to allies when picked up.

Void Grenades

  • Void Wall: A grenade that creates a horizontal wall of burning Void Light.
  • Vortex Grenade: A grenade that creates a vortex that pulls targets inward and continuously damages those trapped inside.

Stasis Grenades

  • Glacier Grenade – A grenade that creates walls out of Stasis crystals to block damage and freeze targets; these walls can be shattered for damage.
  • Duskfield Grenade – A grenade that shatters on impact, leaving behind a field that slows targets and freezes those who do not leave the volume.
  • Coldsnap Grenade – A grenade that freezes on impact and sends another seeker to find and freeze targets.

Enemies

Most enemy races have access to Grenades, usually wielded by low ranking members of the faction. Fallen Dregs use Shock Grenades and Vex Hobgoblins use Slap Grenades in Destiny, while in Destiny 2, in addition to the above, Cabal Legionaries have their Cabal Frag Detonators, Hive Acolytes have Acolyte Grenades and the new Scorn Stalkers use Scorn Grenades. In addition to this, Ultra enemies may have the ability to use their brethren's Grenades even if not of the same class, like Phry'zhia, the Insatiable in the Grasp of Avarice Dungeon.

Nearby combatant Grenades are highlighted with a bomb symbol on the player's HUD, pointing towards them. Some sacrificial enemies, like Lucent Moths and Vex Seekers, are also highlighted this way.

Despite technically being Weapons, enemy Grenades are considered Abilities, and their use can be inhibited through Suppression, Slow and Anti-Overload effects.
