"Is my cyclical death not the very engine which brings you here, again and again, in hope of answers? Thus I do own the portion of your mind which you devote to truth's pursuit."
— Dûl Incaru to the Guardian

Dûl Incaru, the Eternal Return is an Ascendant Hive Wizard and a daughter of Savathûn, the Witch-Queen, serving as the final encounter of The Shattered Throne dungeon.

BiographyEdit

Having taken over Mara Sov's corrupted throne world of Eleusinia, Dûl Incaru is responsible for the Taken curse after Riven's wish unleashed upon the Dreaming City. Seeking the key to the Distributary in conquest of her mother's scheme to gain godly tribute from its time dilation, the daughter of the Witch Queen commands the Taken and their corruption that seeps from Eleusinia in a battle with the Awoken and Guardians, allying with Xivu Arath's Horde and facing Scorn in the crossfire. She was eventually confronted by Guardians after entering Eleusinia's fully-powered gateway, who killed the Wizard despite the presence of her Darkblade bodyguards known as the Fatesmiths (Gaurog, Alak-Tor, and Ba-Kuur).

However, it appeared to be a ruse as her death revealed the true nature of the curse: to trap the Dreaming City in a 3-week time-loop upon her death; simulated by the Taken Vex mind Quria, Blade Transform and made into reality by Riven's wish. In a series of cryptic messages left in Glimmer, Dûl Incaru allegedly communicates with the Guardian under the guise of several different identities, including Eris Morn, Medusa, and even Quria, Blade Transform. [1] She also relays a falsified message, purportedly from her mother Savathun. The message contains information about a new form of tribute: "Imbaru." This new tithe structure is based on the pact originally made with the Worm Gods on Fundament. In the Books of Sorrow, Yul tells Savathun: "Sathona, you may never abandon cunning. If you do, your worm will consume you." Imbaru uses that clause of the pact to potentially circumvent the Hive's "killing for sustenance" structure. Imbaru would keep Savathun's worm fed as long as she is never fully understood.[2]

It is worth mentioning that the author of the Truth to Power missives has never been confirmed.

GameplayEdit

If Dûl Incaru or her Fatesmiths are shot by a Guardian, or one gets too close, the encounter will begin, where she will unleash her Fatesmiths and Taken Psion back-up. She will remain immune for most of the fight. On occasion, she will conjure a Void Crystal behind herself, which will make any living Fatesmiths immune to all damage. Destroying the crystal will allow you to damage the Fatesmiths again, but will also revive any dead Fatesmiths and summon another wave of Taken Psions.

To deal damage to her, Guardians must kill the Fatesmiths and collect their Finite Thoughts, which will allow 45 seconds of damage; the more Finite Thoughts collected (a maximum of 3), the more damage that can be done to Dûl Incaru (note, unlike Vorgeth's Petitioner's Mark, the timer cannot be reset). Once the timer hits 0, the players are killed, so it is advised that the players gather on the center altar so that they can be cleansed of the Finite Thought before it can fatally affect them. After the damage phase, the players should wait for Incaru to conjure another Crystal in order to summon the Fatesmiths once more and prep for another damage phase.

TriviaEdit

  • The eternal return hypothesis is a model of cosmological development which posits that the universe will re-enact the same series of events for eternity.
    • This is in reference to Riven's curse, specifically referring to the curse would 'reset' the Dreaming City to when the curse was first afflicted, progressing until Guardians once again kill Dûl Incaru again, and again, repeating the cycle every three weeks, creating a kill battery for Savathûn and giving her unlimited power.
  • Dûl Incaru is the third child of Savathûn to appear in all of Destiny, after Balwûr and Malok, Pride of Oryx.
