The Witness seems to always refer to itself in the plural; [[Savathûn]] also makes reference to the Witness having "many selves". This suggests that the Witness may be a gestalt entity or collective consciousness of some kind.

The true personality of The Witness is difficult to discern, but it appears to possess a very calm, stoic and meticulous nature, never being seen to raise its voice or be upset when its plans are facing setbacks. It even appears to speak in a flattering, almost mentor-like tone when talking directly towards the Guardians. The same can be said for its Disciples. However, The Witness is nonetheless a fearsome being and is often dreaded by its own followers, who very clearly fear its wrath. Savathûn, herself a god who had the power of the Light and resurrection, would rather sequester the Traveler than attempt to defeat the Witness. Eramis, once freed from her Stasis cocoon, is explicitly motivated by fear of what the Witness will do to her should she fail to gather the Pieces of Nezarec. Rhulk, although much more subtle about it, is quick to beg the Witness for forgiveness upon his final defeat.
