According to the Lore Book "Unveiling", in the state before time and the universe began, the Light and Darkness engaged each other in a "game", analogous to a massively more complex version of the "Game of Life" invented by Earth mathematician John Conway; in the Book, this game is described allegorically as being played using flowers in a garden. This game would always end in one outcome: a self-perpetuating pattern which subsumed all others in the game. While this pleased the Darkness, the Light became "vexed" by this result.

When the Light and Darkness began to fight with one another in the primordial state of reality, the final patterns which had dominated their previous "games" escaped into the nascent universe. The patterns manifested themselves within matter, influencing the chemistry within the cores of comets orbiting young stars. These comets then rained down on lifeless planets, and the molecules they carried developed into the first radiolaria. From this point forward, the Vex were driven to once more totally dominate the reality they found themselves in, though operating on "outdated" rules that did not account for the acausal powers of the Darkness or the Light.
The Vex life-pattern originated in the simulations conducted between the Light and Darkness prior to the creation of the universe. Notably, all simulations would end with a Pattern like or identical to the Vex emerging and dominating the entire simulation. This was pleasing to the Darkness, but was vexatious to the Light. When Light and Dark began to war, initiating the beginning of the universe, the Vex pattern escaped into it. In the initial hot state of the universe the Vex pattern subsisted as quantum fluxuations, before eventually creating a more stable substrate for themselves in the briny seas of the first worlds to form in the universe, the Radiolaria.

The rest of the Vex's evolutionary history is a matter of speculation, but Clovis Bray I hypothesized some likely intermediate steps during his studies of the Vex structures around 2082 Volantis. In particular, he suggested that Vex radiolaria began as radiotrophic, colonial microbes that coordinated via swarm intelligence. Vex colonies formed self-replicating "patterns" capable of collectively performing cognition and storing information. The first Vex "chassis" was likely a sac composed of enmeshed, specialized radiolaria that produced hydrogel or silica plating, which would have initially served to guard the rest of the colony against radiation and dehydration. Under this theory, the level of cooperation necessary to create these precursor-chassis would gradually be refined into the development of larger and more complicated structures, and the knowledge of how to create those structures would be encoded in the pattern of the colony, and this pattern would become the foundation of the Vex "group mind". Everything the Vex are and everything the Vex do (if any meaningful distinction exists between the two) is ultimately an outgrowth of this pattern.
The rest of the Vex's evolutionary history is a matter of speculation, but Clovis Bray I hypothesized some likely intermediate steps during his studies of the Vex structures around 2082 Volantis. The Vex developed in extremely high energy environments and competition and predation were not optimal strategies. Instead, the group signalling between the radiolaria formed the basis for the evolution of a swarm intelligence. The radiolaria developed crude armor, possibly hydrogel or silica plating to shield themselves from intense cosmic radiation, allowing them to remain close enough to the surface to directly feed off this plentiful energy source. From here, the Vex constructed and developed ever more complex structures, storing the information in the patterns of the radiolaria colonies themselves. Their microscopic nature allowed the Vex intelligence to deduce and experiment with quantum and high energy physics early, while the radiolaria themselves became, in essence, microscopic tool users.

The Vex developed rapidly, and at some point in their development in the early universe, developed mega-structures around the shortlived hypermassive stars their planets originated around. These structures artifically extended the lifespan of these stars, allowing their use to 'forge' heavier elements that would have been otherwise fantastically rare in the early, low metal universe.
