Brand is a moon inhabited by Psions within the territory of the Cabal Empire. Freeborn Otzot rebuilt the OXA Machine on the surface of Brand in violation of the Empire's edicts. However, Emperor Calus halted Evocate-General Umun'arath from sending a fleet to bombard Brand and destroy the machine and instead allowed Otzot to continue using it. However, Otzot came to fear for her high social status within the Empire when Calus announced plans to free all Psions from servitude and used the OXA Machine to send secret messages that facilitated Dominus Ghaul's coup against Calus.[1]
