Hallam Fen is an Awoken Paladin of the Royal Awoken Guard. He commands the Royal Armada of the Reef, presumably the Corsairs.

Biography

The Reef Wars

A protégé of Paladin Imogen Rife, Fen served as a commander in the Reef's armada during the Reef Wars. At the Siege of Pallas, after capturing and imprisoning Weksis, the Meek, Fen worked in conjunction with the Techeun Witches and the Crows to create a Harbinger illusion to fool the massive Fallen Wolf fleet amassed around Pallas, and break the several-year-long stalemate. As a result of this brilliant maneuver Fen, and Paladins Leona Bryl and Kamala Rior were able to outflank and obliterate the Wolf fleet, freeing the people of Pallas, and capturing Wolf nobles Drevis, Wolf Baroness and Pirsis, Pallas-Bane, who was responsible for the death of his mentor Rife during the siege. Fen was awarded Rife's place among the Seven Paladins by Queen Mara Sov for his service.

Later, when Skolas, Wolf Kell attempted to lead a final assault on Cybele, now-Paladin Fen was there with the other three Armada Paladins to capture him.The Reef Wars were ended by this maneuver. For his efforts, a weapon was commissioned for his personal use. In memory of Imogen Rife, who was killed by Pirsis, Fen had another weapon commissioned.

Decades later, Fen attended a ceremony in the Dreaming City's Hall of Names that saw the promotion of Petra Venj to the rank of Queen's Wrath. Fen was visibly upset during the ceremony, as he and several other Paladins did not believe Petra was worthy of the post, considering her too young and inexperienced to replace Sjur Eido and believing that another Paladin should have received the honor instead.

In the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Saturn and the presumed deaths of Queen Mara and Prince Uldren Sov, the Reef was invaded by Hive Seeder Ships from the fleet of Oryx, the Taken King. Fen was placed in charge of civilian defense by Petra, who had been designated Regent-Commander by the Queen prior to the battle. As chaos erupted across the Reef Fen evacuated as many civilians as he could to the shielded inner cities of the Reef. Three months after the end of the Taken War a memorial service for Prince Uldren by the Crows was held at their headquarters on the Black Hull. As the service was about to begin, Fen searched for Petra and found her in a washroom near the entrance to the Black Hull. She stated that she would not attend, but Fen countered that as Regent-Commander she needed to attend and that the Crows would want to see her, while also noting that a sword had been crafted in Uldren's honor. However, Petra stated that her presence would be confirming the belief that Uldren and Mara were dead. Fen told her that they were, but Petra said she wanted the people of the Reef to hope they survived.

Fen later reported to Petra that there was a new major figure in the underworld of the Tangled Shore going by the moniker of "Crow", which he assumed was meant to mock the Awoken's grief over their lost Prince. However, it was soon revealed that the Crow was in fact Uldren himself, having survived the Battle of Saturn. Using the Paladin Oran coding system, Fen sent another message to Petra informing her of Uldren's survival and that he had been located.

Months later, access to the Dreaming City was restored after Uldren led the Scorn in an assault on The Watchtower that was halted by Petra and The Guardian. The return to the Dreaming City allowed Petra to contact Mara using the Oracle Engine. After news of the Queen's survival was broadcast across the Reef, Fen contacted Petra and apologized to her for doubting her belief in Mara. Due to bad connection, Fen could not make out the expression on Petra's face, but she dismissed his apology by claiming his doubts did not matter now. However, Fen told her it did matter and, with difficulty, confessed that he and many others had felt she was unworthy of her position and believed that Mara had favored her for the wrong reasons. He then admitted that with everything that had gone wrong since the Taken War he had felt he would be better off in charge of the Reef than Petra, but now understood that the true job Petra had been left was to keep the faith in Mara and her plans and that only Petra could have succeeded in doing so.
